C36 head question

Hi Guys,

I picked up a non-running W201 with a swapped M104 from a C36 installed. The head gasket was supposedly blown when I got it, so I didn't pay much (thankfully)

A friend has just taken the head off and it's pretty clear that the gasket was bad. I'm about to send the head out for testing, but just ran the part number of the head to find out that it appears to be a head from a non-AMG M104!

I contacted my local MB dealer and was told that the part number should be HWA 104 016 02(maybe 01) 01 but the head I took off has R104 016 16 01 (yes, 'R' no 'A') The dealer ran this number and came up with nothing.

So it's looking like I got screwed. Are there any visual cues I can use to confirm this? I've done searchs on pics of a AMG M104 heads, but none of them are detailed enough to help me out.

I didn't pay much for the car, but enough that I don't want to just flush the money away.

The easiest way at this point to identify the engine is to check the bore. If it is 91mm then it is a 3.6. They will also be a flat top piston. The block will have a AMG36 stamped below the engine number. As far as the head goes. I would just check the cams. I think there is a little port work done on the exhaust side from memory. The intake cam should be a amg part and should have more than 50mm from the base circle to the tip. Stock m104 lift is 8.9mm the 3.6 has close to 10mm of lift.

Checking the stroke is a quick way also.

the bore measure 91mm, but there appears to be no engine number or AMG markings anywhere at all. I found this thread which has guided me on what to check

So which engine do I have?!

At this point, I need to know so that I can order the correct head gasket

update - We've found the AMG stuff on the cam

As for the block, it's too corroded for us to be sure, but given the bore measures 91mm, we're likely in the clear

Quick question about head gaskets - am I correct is seeing that I can only get an original head gasket from the dealer? What about the other items (head bolts, gaskets, etc)

Measure the stroke, it is possible someone did a large bore 3.2 L . As this stuff ages, parts get mixed up and rebuilt so nothing can be taken for granted.

Also, for engines that are assembled, stroke can be checked through the spark plug hole.
