Four-pot options for 1988 190E 5-speed?

Currently it has the 2.3l 8-valve 4-cyl M102.985.

What are some good candidates for a 4-pot replacement?

Hmm... would a 3.0l NA Porsche engine from a 968 work, I wonder

If you are set on a four cylinder restriction, look to Nissan, Honda, Toyota, Mitsubishi, GM Ecotech, Ford Focus, Chrysler Neon, etc. Turn attention to the most recent technologies.

Yep. That or keep the original motor and squeeze some extra performance from it when the time comes

An M111 kompressor motor would be a cool swap. Pretty easy too, surprised it isnt more common.

That would be cool. Kind of like a modern day redeaux of the 2.3-16. And the M111 is readily available
