Will a 96 and older gas motor run without throttle control electronics?

As an interim to one of my projects, I might use a 96 and older computer on a M104 3.2 from a E320 / W210 . These have a mechanical throttle body with a slip clutch, motor and a throttle control box.

I won't be using ABS so obtaining a speed signal for the ASR won't be possible.

Any idea that if I lock the slip clutch and don't have a throttle box will it run and drive?

This is also posted in the Tech section.

Thanks

I am pretty sure it will hit an early rev limiter without wheel speed.

It would seem that an ECU from a non-ASR, non-electric throttle application would be most appropriate. Does such a thing exist?

Yes. Even my 95 034 is a non-ASR car. Avoid all the hassles and just get parts from non-ASR donors.

Regards,
Eric

Now that I think about it, the ECUs are the same. It's the ABS brain that is different.

I am however speaking of LH. HFM and/or ME may be another matter in which case my first post still applies.

96 should have HFM.

The 97 UP ME 2.1 ( also has full OBD 2 ) has full electronic throttle without any mechanical connection. It also has CAN communication between the ECU , transmission and ABS computers.

What started the question is I'm buying a used engine from a 96 E320 to be used on project "A" running 97 ME 2.1 and might make use of the fuel system on project "B" that needs a standalone fuel system.

I'll have a look at the donor car for ASR / snow tire switch. I do have the VIN but don't want to use up too many of my dealer parts dept favors by getting a data card printed. Is there an online was to get a data card?

I looked at the donor car today, no ASR switch on the dash so it looks like I'll be OK without a throttle control box as I would not expect it to have one.

The car was hit in the LR quarter and very fixable. In fact, it would have passed state safety inspection as the hit didn't break the tail light or leave any sharp edges!
