Congratulations on your engine swap Elgriffo. I see that you are running the M117 distributor and accessories. Are you also using the M117 ECU?

First Gear Start

I'm going to be adding first gear start to my car by using the control module mentioned on this page.

PeachPartsWiki: Enable 1st Gear Start

I will be using the E/S switch on the "Euro" shift gate to control power to the the module, so that I can still use second gear starts in wet/slippery conditions. The pictures show my new shift gate and where I will be mounting the first gear start control module and the relay that I will need to give it power.

The only reason a relay is necessary between the switch and the control module is that the switch only completes the circuit if in the "E" position rather than the "S" position. So, with the switch in the "S" position, the relay will feed power to the control module with the normally closed side. Then, when the E/S switch is in the "E" position, it will energize the coil in the relay and open the circuit that was giving power to the control module, thus making the car start in second gear.

Alternatively, I could just power the relay with the switch in the "E" position, but that just seems wrong, considering "E" stands for economy and "S" stands for standard.

Anyway, I'll post some more information as I go.

BE:

Have you obtained the N23 relay? What was the source if you have?
Do you have any documentation about the N23, particularly the MPH at which it releases 1st gear?

I already have the N23 relay. I got it from a 1985 500SEL in my local Pick-N-Pull yard.

I don't have any documentation regarding the N23 relay, although, I remember reading somewhere that it releases the kickdown solenoid around 5 MPH.

Was the shift gate also from the 1985 500SEL that provided the N23?

No, the shift gate is from a '90 or '91 V8 W126. I'm not exactly sure what model it came from because I bought it from a guy in Germany.

First Gear Start Installed!

I installed my first gear start setup and it works perfectly! Using the N23 relay is definitely the way to go. It shifts into first gear even if you don't come to complete stop, so it feels very natural and factory. At light throttle it will stay in first until about 8-10 MPH, then smoothly shift to second, but if you are harder on the throttle it will stay in first gear longer. It also doesn't interfere with the cold start upshift delay. When the car is first started in the morning, it will shift from first to second and then hold second gear until 30 MPH and then continue with normal shifting characteristics. W126 owners don't have to worry about the cold start upshift delay, unless they have a '90-'91 300SE(L).

I'll post up some pictures of my setup later this weekend. I can also post a wiring diagram of how I wired it to work with the E/S switch if anyone is interested.

Update

I wanted to post an update on how the car has been doing. It has been great, but not without problems. One problem that kept reoccurring was that the engine seemed to run around 100 C whenever I drove the car with the A/C on a warm day. It didn't seem right especially since the car would run the hottest on the highway. So, I figured that my radiator was due to be replaced. Replacing the radiator made a big difference, but it still seemed to have trouble staying cool.

So, I decided that it was the electric fans. They just don't move enough air. Flex-a-lite seems to be rather generous with their CFM ratings and I have heard that the controllers aren't to be trusted after 2 years of daily driver duty.

I wanted a big change. I found that a number of Mopar guys were using the brush-less motor fans off of W203 Mercedes and that the fan with its shroud should fit my radiator (a standard 560SEL radiator). I was interested, but had trouble finding out how to control it since it has it's own computer built into the fan.

Well, there is a guy that makes controllers just for this fan. It incorporates some great features and is very high quality. It is reasonably priced at $125 plus shipping.

Here's the link to his website: Micro Autonomations

I got a W203 fan from the local Pick-N-Pull and trimmed the shroud to fit my radiator and hooked it up. It is amazing! It moves an incredible amount of air and is very quiet compared to any other electric fan I've heard. I removed my auxiliary fans to get more airflow, which also helped my car run cooler. With this fan my car never goes above 95 C and it will only go that high very briefly after blasting down the freeway on a hot day with the A/C maxed out and then coming to a stop.

It's the only electric fan set-up I would recommend.

The Final Result

I finally went and got the car inspected by the California Bureau of Automotive Repair and it passed! Now when I take it in for a smog inspection it will be tested as a 1991 500SL.

I have to say, the referees get a bad reputation for being "unresonable", but if you don't cut corners, and all of the emissions equipment is there, you will have no problems getting an engine swap smog legal here in California.

If anyone has any questions about the process, feel free to ask me about it.
