W203 6-swap into w124
6-speed***
I found the transmission from a c320, haven't bought it yet but will be picking it up along with the pedal assembly and slave cylinder etc next week at some point if it's still available. From what I've read so far it has direct bolt on compatibility to the M104. Has anyone done this before? Is there anything else I will need? Will the drive shaft line up? Will I need to change computers? Any tips and advice will be greatly appreciated. I have a 94 wagon but might be trading it for a 91 coupe. The m103 has the same bell housing pattern right? |
I'm pretty sure the C320 is a V6, if so the BH isn't the same. The 4 cyl 95 - 00 C220 C230 and SLK230 are the same though I'm pretty sure they stood the motor up at some point post 01 so the shifter would be in a odd place.
The M104 ( 24 valve head ) is the same basic block as the M103 ( 12 valve head ) |
Oh my mistake. It is actually a c230 with the 1.8 kompressor but it's a 2005.

The best thing to do is look on e bay for engines / transmissions. If they post an actual pic you can compare BH shapes.

Oh so the shifter would be cockeyed if mounted to the m104?

That is the leaned over to the right engine, same tilt as a M103 / M104.
Have a look at the leading edge of the valve cover, the top of the cover is horizontal but where the gasket seals is tilted. ( tall passenger side , short driver side ) |
So it will work?
|
Yes

Sweet thanks

Got no response from that listing. Anyone do bell housing adapters to run a getrag or a T5?
|
unfortunately not.

One thing I haven't seen addressed yet is the speedometer. All of the 6 cyl 124 cars have a cable driven speedo which the later manual trans do not accommodate. The V8 124 cars have an electronic speedo that swaps into the cluster but you still need a way to drive it. Having a later model manual trans and a functional speedo is going to get tricky unless you are handy with electronics, microcontrollers, ect. There may be a solution in the aftermarket but I'm not aware if one exists. In my 722.6 swap the PCS TCU handled the speedo VSS signal with little fuss.
