Another maintenance watch item on 500Es

For all I know, this is equally applicable to other 119-engined cars:

I posted recently how I discovered a damaged wiring harness while I had the airbox off of the 500E to change the air filters.

Well, I also took a look at the seal ring, which is the rubber collar which fits the protrusion from the bottom of the airbox, and comes down around the screened inlet to the intake manifold.

That was beginning to warp and curl at one edge from engine heat. The curling was so neat and symmetric that I had to check it with a Benz parts pro to be sure that it wasn't -meant- to be that shape! It is not.

If yours shows similar signs of deformation, replace it. This one wasn't far enough gone to be able to compromise the integrity of the air seal at the intake. A bad case of deformation might allow grit to be sucked in on a path which bypasses the air filters entirely.

The seal ring is not an expensive part (and here is where I kick myself for not having the part number here while I type; I'll fetch it later if I remember). Cheap insurance on an expensive motor.

Roger. Part number, per the receipt, reports as:

000 094 17 60

The parts department I originally spoke to (different dealership) used the term "seal ring" for this component, but the receipt lists it as a "gasket, air f".

The car was in for a wiring harness job as the primary work. I wasn't charged for that (whether Starmark or not I can't say), but I was charged for the seal. Properly so, I think. That's a normal-wear item in my book.

MB of Devon, PA, charged $18.38 for the ring. The other local dealer parts department had quoted around eleven bucks for the same component, so shop the quote around (or order it from PartsShop, whom I'm reasonably certain could find one for you).

To all M119 Owners,

This is a quick and cheap maintenance item that I wouldn't overlook. I just bought the part from Partshop for around $11.00, Phil helped me get the right part.

It takes all of 5 minutes to install and it's worth it. Mine was beginning to harden from the excessive heat however it was still retaining it's shape.

s/b is right, get the part and change it, it's cheap insurance!
