Stock Muffler NLA - Dual Mufflers?

So the European M110 dual in, dual out, mufflers are NLA. Even tried Timevalve and never heard back in six months or more.

Right now the muffler is badly rotten and don't mind the sound level. Done hours upon hours of research and settled on a Magnaflow MF. Reason being the quietest non-chambered exhaust and doesn't drone.

Plan to use the stock catalytic converter and resonators for now, running 2" pipe from the 1 5/8" where the stock muffler attached since the pipes are new. If doesn't pass emissions, then the only option is a Magnaflow catalytic converter which is 2 inch, so forces running all new pipe. Just want to do minimum now and see where at, especially sound quality. Further, only have eight inches of width and about seven inches of height for the muffler.

Could simply go with a 5"x8" oval, however, doesn't come smaller than 2.5 inches, which have to be necked down both sides, as to me, look silly to have a dual 2.5 inch on a M110. The 2 inch mufflers have 2.5 inch internal pipes, so no difference really.

My question is regarding a crazy idea: what about two 4" rounds side by side?

First, know will be louder than an oval as less packing material.

Second, thought is that have to weld on the stock hangers so be a way to connect the two so as one unit. Then be less pipe, less joints, and less likely to leak.

Thank y'all in advance for any help. :D

Thank you for the feedback. :D

Was thinking basically the reverse of what you did: one resonator to two mufflers side by side.

Not finding the post, more important, not finding a video of the sound. These inline engines are unique and can't even find one for BMW except Magnaflows or mufflers for specific applications. Trying to avoid sounding like an American or Asian and express the uniqueness of an inline engine.

As an environmentalist living in a smoggy valley which has emissions testing, can't run without catalytic converters. The high flows are better than stock and with the larger pipe, flow better than stock even with stock resonator. If the resonators were instead high flows or none at all, certainly be even better. As I understand, you want some restriction to keep the low end torque, though some better flow help with efficiency and temperature. In the end, not going building a high performance race vehical, just a little more sound, but less than running without a rear muffler as now.

B.T.W., did once for grins run no pipes, just the headers, and wasn't all that loud, reminded me of an inline aircraft engine. Though not sure the neighbors appreciate it at dawn :P

As I understand, the 280SL M110 had a dual in, dual out, stock unlike the W123 European that seems from what little can find was a dual in, single out. Right now I have the former and love that it's a better design and who doesn't like two pipes?

Speaking of pipes, plan to extend them a little more so hopefully the exhaust doesn't get into the fog lamp like stock since those are a pain to get here in the States. Leaning towards pea shooters so obvious that have something special and keeping with a SL thought.

Ha! We have the same tastes in automotive programmes. ;)

I have watched most of Jay's videos on his vehicals. Some not so interested in, but still learn something. Wonder if the collection will stay in Burbank or moved to Rhode Island.

My Brother got me started on Road Kill, so when the Engine Master's first came out, started watching and have seen all. Am not into American, just German, but still watch for learning and oft applicable. Confirms don't want to go larger than two inch diameter pipes with stock being about 1 5/8" (actually 40mm, not 41.3mm).

That Jaguar have seen the video before, but love the sound so much, especially that idle. Looks like has mufflers, but not like you can fit those on a Mercedes. :P

*gasp* get an E46 muffler. The bimmer guys toss them out in favor of fancy stuff, and it should be a decent fit for oyu. Just my $0.02

Why gasp?

The vintage European mufflers were basically the same: perforated pipe in a round can. Plus, no other options other than aftermarket since Timevalve is no longer in business.

Checked on that, how would it mount? Also, how is that going to work with the vacuum reserve tank?

As I said, the plan is to use the stock muffler cavity and mounts to avoid body modification and having to relocate the vacuum reserve tank.
