Question on W124 final drives:

I have a 95 S124 with M104 that originally came with the 4 speed auto transmission. From my research I should have the 210mm 2.65 final drive (if everything is original).

I’m swapping in a 717.430 5-speed manual transmission from a 300TE that had a M103.

717.430 single mass flywheel
Gear ratios (5-speed)
5th (0.80) 2.46:1
4th (1.00) 3.07:1
3rd (1.38) 4.24:1
2nd (2.18) 6.69:1
1st (3.86) 11.85:1

If it were to keep the 4-speed auto, I was going to try and find a 2.82 final to make the car a bit more fun to drive, but I enjoy driving manuals far too much.
My real concern is with such a tall stock gear, how the car will feel & perform from a standstill once I install the 5-speed, and based on my calculations 5th is going to be useless. So I need a shorter gear to match the transmission. I believe the stock final was a 3.27 on the car the 5-speed came off of, and I know for a fact it used a 185mm differential.

***The second half of this post is related to available LSD’s for these same final drive ratios***

I’ve read a number of threads, on this forum and others, and from what I’ve been able to find Quaife & WaveTrac both fit the 210mm differential, and work with any final drive between 2.66 to 3.07. There was talk from a couple older threads of using a spacer or shim to make the 3.27 & 3.69 finals fit onto the Quaife, but most threads fizzled out or were abandoned without answering that question.

The reason for all of this is that I need to change the final drive out for a shorter gear with the 5-speed swap, I’d like a sportier feel from my car, and I’d like to plan for the future as I want to install an LSD. So I want to buy the correct final that will also work with this plan.

Thanks in advance!

Gear ratios (5-speed)
5th (0.80) 2.46:1
4th (1.00) 3.07:1 there's the FD ratio for the 300TE
3rd (1.38) 4.24:1
2nd (2.18) 6.69:1
1st (3.86) 11.85:1
3.07 is the FD of the 300TE if it was an OEM manual trans. If auto box, the OEM FD was 3.27, or 2.87.

The 3.07 is the right choice. That’s what I had in my manual swapped s124. There are plenty of them out there in the 185 mm diff. It’s an easy conversion, you just need the axles that go with the smaller diff.

Which 5 speed do you have, and/or what is 5th gear ratio?

What are your cruising RPMs on the highway? Say at 65?

OM603 turbo engine? My 87 300TD has a 2.65 rear end. Is the original 2.65 a 185 mm or 210 mm diff?

Thanks! Interested in swapping diffs when I drop in the 722.6.

I used the 716.411 manual and the cruising rpm @ 65 was around 2200 rpm if I remember correctly.
As far as diff size, most likely you have the 185 mm diff, the 210mm came in the m104 equipped cars.
