brake upgrade 560SEL
Is there anything I can do to upgrade my brakes other than drilled rotors or switching brake pads? Would brakes from any newer models fit my car?

Braided brake lines may be an inexpensive help.

yeah the braided lines and some high performance brake fluid would help. You could also do a brake upgrade with bigger rotors/calipers off a different model benz(600SL, etc). 2phast has a 190e and installed a 400E brake setup. Since you already have a 560sel, you would have to investigate which model would really give you a big gain. Plus, a bigger brake kit would more than likely require bigger wheels for rotor clearance.

btw, when I said the brake lines and high perf brake fluid, that's not gonna make your car stop better. it will only affect the brake pedal feel since i assume you don't race the car.

Are you experiencing fade or want shorter braking distances.
For fade, get more airflow directed to the calipers & rotor with a brake hose kit. If you still have fade, time for bigger rotors & calipers. For shorter braking distances get sticky tires also wider. I would want a 280 A/A or 320A/A tire in a 235 or wider if possible. Flush your brakes system and use ATE fluid. You might want to try new brake lines (factory OEM rubber ones are fine) esp. if over 8-years old. A good link from a "racer's" perspective is here: http://www.teamscr.com/grmbrakes.htm Excerpt: "In summary, brake system modifications have their place to help make your ride more consistent, predictable, and user-friendly; however, if your ultimate goal is to decrease your stopping distance, look no further than the four palm-sized patches of rubber connecting your ride to the ground." :-) neil 1988 360TE AMG 1993 500E |

I was thinking maybe I could fit brakes from a newer S class. Does anyone know which if any would fit? My car is a 1990 560sel (126).

The newer S-Class has 13.1" cross drilled vented rotors in the front, and just vented in the rear. As with most upgrades, as long as you get all the pieces involved I'm sure it would work. You also need to look at the clearence from your wheels
