Track times?
I am curious what a stock 560SEL runs in the 1/4 mile, also what does a stock 500E run in the 1/4?
Thanks |
Everything I've read for the 560SEL has the 1/4 mile at about 15.6 secs, 0-60 in 7.6 secs. I've read a few tenths difference either way, but those numbers seem to ring true for me. Not a hot-rod by any means, more of a bahn-burner.
500E is a quite a bit faster, different animal althogether. :) |
Eurocoupe (member of the forum) has a 500 SEC with a 560 Euro and 3.27 gears and he does the quarter mile in 15 flat, but he burns his tires out most of first and into second. So if he hooks up he could probably do mid 14s or less.

A stock 500E will run high 13s-low 14s in the 1/4. My best at the drags is a 13.8.
|
13.8 with a 500E....That seems pretty quick, but not out of the reach of the 500E. What are the factory specs? The reason that I question that is the AMG hammer with the 5.6 L DOHC engine was supposed to run 13.5s, and the 6.0L was supposed to run 13.2. Do 13.8 Seems really quick for a 500E.

I have run a 14.8 in my E420, I was quite happy to say the least.
Subman |
Subman, you modified your differential right?
Austin |
Negitive Night Rider!!!!
My 1/4 time was so good because it was 57 out and I just had a perfect run. Not to mention that I pullled the corrners and the strip under the headlights for better induction. But my best time other than that was a 15.1. Man would I like the diff swap thoug. Subman |
'92 500E factory spec. (published): 0-60mph 6.3 secs., standing 1/4 mile 14.7 secs.

Yo Subman,
Well for a E420 15.1 sounds about right on a good night, but Id expect more than that like 15.5 on the quarter. You should really do the differential mod. I can do it for you. Modifying the airdam really helped that much, Geez. Maybe I should do that. 500E factory was 14.7 Id believe that. Id believe at best it could do 14.3 if everything was perfect. But I dont know mercedes get faster over time. It is a known fact. If you got a 100,000 miles and you are doing 13.8 Id believe it. Maybe you can give me a ride. Did you take out the whole interior? Cuz that doesnt count like all the honda kids do. Im talking with the equiptment to hold 4 adults, but not running with four adults. track time is track time, you dont have to minus the reaction time if you didnt know that. My 300D turbo 124 does the quartermile in 18 flat, high 17s if i spool the turbo. Well Id be really interested in a ride, Austin |
I have taken my car to the track and I can say that when it was stock I will run 15.2-15.3 in the 1/4 very consistanly.
I did run a 15.2 with my wheels (they are considerably heavier then stock) and I was quite happy with that. I got your email omega I will reply soon. Subman |
Subman, I believe you now. Sounds reasonable. I was questionable because I drove a 400E that said 96k miles on it, but it was slow as my turbo diesel- the CD. But I talked to my friend and he agrees with you about your times. Sounds good.
I have a friend down the street with a 500E, I'm going to see if I can have him give me a ride tomorrow so I can check on that 1/4 mi time because Im still a little skeptical. But Im starting to believe it more. I called my friend back east with a hammer and he said that he runs 12.8 on the 1/4 mile or less on the 2.24 differential. So Im starting to believe the 500E can do the high 13s now. Thanks, Austin aka Nightrider, omegabenz glad you got the email subman, take care. |
You guys also have to remember that the number Mercedes puts out are always way on the conservative side, so to be able to beat their numbers by a second is not unheard of...
|
I saw Lee run a 14 flat at 100mph in a stock 500E.
I think that they are capable of the 13.8... |
Austin,
I'm not quite sure why you'd doubt me; I ran the 13.8 against the moderator of Hot Rods "zrusny" (Gary B.) in his E55; further, I have the slip to back it up ((13.846@102.12MPH). I encourage benchracing, but not B.S. A 500E if it launches right will run 13.8 - 14.1 all day long (especially on cool days):D |
To Michael
Michael,
I believe you now. I was just kinda skeptical, but I understand that mercedes underrates everything, so I bet that if it was cool out and everything was great you could probably do a 13.5, but 13.8-14.1 I believe you can do that all day long. How did the e55 do compaired to you? THanks, Austin |
The E55 got a bad launch, and according to Gary (not known to be a BSer) was not running really strong. I got him this time, but his time was indeed way off for such a car-it's apparently running better now, so next time out it will likely go the other way;)

The 14.0 @ 100 mph was also on a 95+ degree 100% humidity Georgia afternoon. With cars and whatnot track temps had to be much higher. Can't go off the bumper thermostat as it frequently "head soaks" from the radiator at parkinglot speeds sitting in line at the drags. Probably safe to say it was 100-110 F on the track and 95-98 F in the stands. 92' 500E, bone stock, etc.
Given temps in the 35F to 50F range that car could be well into the mid 13's. Any of the usual mods would bump that figure even lower. MB typically rates their cars for the worst possible specimen off the production line under less than favorable circumstances can still make "spec". Its just their philosophy for the cars of that era. Whether that philosophy has changed and they rate the newer cars closer to what they are capable of under ideal circumstances is open to debate. As for Michael and Gary....these cars do get faster over the first few thousand miles. When they ran I believe the E55 was still in the "break in" period. Dunno who will win a rematch (if it ever happens) but I will sure be fun to watch. Just drive it, take care of it, and by all means...enjoy it! Hope this helps, Lee |
