Potential 500E owner

I am looking at a 1993 500E with 98K miles on it. And I have a few questions:

With that many miles on it, what repairs would I be face with? If you have a rough idea on the cost of repairs that would be helpful.
a) Suspension (Shocks and Struts)
b) Electronics (including EMS and ECU)
c) Engine

Since I live in the Bay Area (CA), I had a friend check it out for me and he said it was in pristine condition. The only exception is, when he went to start the car, it did not start as he expected. It made a loud noise as it turned over and it had a rough idle with loud tapping noise from the lifters. The tapping noise went away (about 90% to 95%) after the car warmed up.

I spoke to Fletcher Jones Mercedes in Newport Beach (its where the car was originally purchased at) and had them do a look up by the VIN to review the service/worked performed. In summary all required service work was performed before or at the schedule maintenance timeframe. I also performed a carfax and it came back clean.

Based on the response by the board, I will have Fletcher Jones Mercedes perform a Pre-Buy inspection.

This car is located at RNE Motorcar Market Place in Fountain Valley CA. They are asking just under $24K. This question is directed to new 500E owners, did you happen to see this in AutoTrader and if you did, why did you pass on it? For everyone else, is there room to negotiate? In your opinion, what would be a fair price to offer?

KBB results are:

Trade in: Excellent - $19,325.00 Good - $18,125.00

Private Party: Excellent - $25,040.00 Good - $23,435.00

Thanks in advance for all responses and assistance.

There are many threads about ticking noise and M119 V8 engines.

The source of the ticking noise is usually the oil feed tubes, which is a very inexpensive repair. This thread describes the problem the best:

Tick, tick fixed tnx to Donnie!

Other sources of valve noise can be, but not limited to:

1. Cam lobe wear
2. timing belt tensioner
3. hydraulic lifter
4. loose timing chain

I hope some 500E owners can talk about their experience with this issue.

as far as i know, there aren't any real problem areas with the 500E as there were with the 2.3-16.

At close to 100k miles, you might want to have the timing chain checked. they may have stretched to the point of replacement..depends on how it was driven. Same goes for the rear suspension bushings. if the car was routinely pushed hard, they'll need replacing. other than that, it's a relatively routine car to maintain. frequent and regular oil changes are the key. if you're changing at 3k miles, no need to go to synthetic lube in my opinion. unless you really drive hard.

I guess I'm a relatively new owner (3 months) and I remember this car became available shortly after I purchased mine. I also looked at another vehicle at this dealership back in February and the car I looked at had 65K, clear carfax report but upon visual inspection had a major accident. Make sure you check for that, carfax doesn't find everything.

The following are some area's you'll want to look when inspecting a car or its history.

1. Timing Chain: Usually wears between 80 - 100K.

2. Rear Hydraulic Shocks: Check for a thumping noise, usually means you'll need to spend a few hundred dollars to rebuild the shocks and the bushings.

3. Power Steering Pump: Very typical for these to leak which means a new pump or seal.

I'm sure the dealership will do a thorough check as well. Make sure a compression check is done, that's very important.

Hope this helps and good luck on your search.

placo1, yhliem, suginami, Thanks for your replies... I plan to schedule the Pre-Buy inspection this coming week. I presume that the compression test is in addition to the Pre-Buy inspection. What numbers should I be looking for? 170 or higher? I know they should all be pretty close per cylinder. What variance is acceptable?

Thanks again,

MikeC

I believe I've read on this site before that no more than 10% difference between the cylinders is desireable.

I have never done compression tests before, so I'm not speaking from experience.

So, did you buy the car? I negotiated with them around a car they had in February, but they did not disclose to me that it had been in an accident.
