5.0 M117 Engine

Vas Its Los
I'm working on my 1984 500SEL. New water pump, cleaned the tank, rebuilt the fuel injection, & it only has 117K on it. I'm going to replace the exhaust withe 2.25" doul exhaust with an X pipe among a few other tweeks. 17"X7.5" MB Kompressor wheels VR tires, & a bigger rear swaybar. I'm thinking of advancing or "dialing in the cams". Anyone have definitive experience with this & whats the "Sweet Spot" ?
Thanks Sincerely
Rev. Buzz

Why not go with a "H" pipe? It will sound better. X pipe has dubious advantages over h pipe. Also cams are most likely retarded a considerable amount (like 10 deg) but you would need to have the engine tuned on a dyno to benefit.

Thanks T.
H pipe sounds good. The exhaust shop I'm going to has a chassis dyno & I plan to take advantage of it when they do my exhaust. Might run twin fuel pumps & a 560 airflow meter if it's possible. I've got a set of tri-Y exhaust manifolds off a euro 107 500SL do you know if those will fit my W126 500SEL. They are both left hand drive. I'm also installing a switch for 1st gear starts.
Thanks T.

Not much experience with the manifolds from those cars but I think the sedan ones are different than the 107 manifolds. I'm sure someone that knows will comment. You can search for pics maybe.

I don't know much about this subject, and I have not owned a 107 but have had several 126s. I think you will find the 107 chassis has little in common with a 126 body and more in the older 115 chassis...for what it might be worth.

No, he means tri-Y like he wrote. That’s what they are, aka “a long tube header”

2 headers like all other V8s. I’m beginning to think you have never seen a long tube header?

OK, to me the tri-Y header in name and function came from a straight 6 cylinder. Three "tri" tubes going in to one collector and then those two collectors could run true dual exhaust pipes all the way out the back or collect in to one larger collector. No idea the kids were calling 4 into 2 into 1 collectors "tri" nowadays. Hard to understand where the "tri" comes from.

And now I understand you probably understand all of this anyways.

It's three y pipes in one, So tri-y. Two on the exhaust ports then a third that they dump into then into one of the dual exhaust pipes. Someone mentioned "long tube headers" these aren't really. Long tubes are generally 4 into one collector.

Yep RWD had got it up there. 3 very different “Y” in one tri-Y or long tube header.
