someone with a K&N airfilter on his 300 turbo diesel?

i will buy a K&N air filter for our 300 turbo diesel so i was looking for people who has one on his car

my question is what is the difference is there much difference?
i have read that it gives 5hp - 15hp more power

thnx !

this one

Maddog 07-05-2002 10:43 AM

I don't have the car but that little hp probably won't be noticable.

300D TURBO 07-05-2002 12:13 PM

ok thnx im going to buy one (im 16 years old) for my dad's car so im looking for some information and im thinking about buying a REMUS muffler is is that one good? or are there better mufflers than remus? is it possible that the rpm range changes? more rpm or something........

I put one in my W123 diesel. I didnt really notice too much.

I put one in my brothers w124 diesel, and you notice a little bit. See with turbo cars, it doesnt really matter what kind of airfilter it is as long as its clean because the turbo will pull the air through it anyway.

You can get them from www.************************ cheaper, and sometimes they have good sales on K&N, but I dont know how it works in holland for shipping and all.

The K&Ns are a lot easier to clean and they trap more particles.

I sold my 1997 E300 Turbodiesel W210? about a year ago, but I ran it with a K&N air-filter for about a year (25,000km) before that. I felt a good improvement. I thought that the electronic throttle (drive-by-wire) seemed to respond faster, and the engine made a lovely noise. About six months later I also had a "Superchip" fitted (www.superchips.co.uk). This made a huge difference. Engine performance was unbelievable. Claimed bhp increase of 15-20%, lifting bhp from 177 to about 210. It certainly felt like it. I drove a new 2001 E320CDI at the time, and my car felt faster than it. Just before I sold it I burned off the rear tyres doing US-style "doughnuts" in a carpark. I never saw a diesel that could do that. I have the photos to prove it.
I now run a 1990 R129 500SL and a 1991 W126 500SEL which I have K&N's in, and again I feel they make a difference and I love the sound.

Well I can't exactly agree with that. Yea no matter what it'll pull it through, but the advantage of putting on a K&N would be that since it has less restriction the motor would be able to pull the air in easier hence less lag. (time that it takes for the turbo to spool up) It also seems that if the motor could pull the air in easier you'd get a little leaner of a mix, yielding better fuel mileage. Then lastly, better throttle response. Now how much this filter changes any of these aspects I don't know, I'm thinking this to myself also as I'm wondering if it'd be worth putting one on my 300D....

I almost think with the OE air filter being so big it isn't much of a restriction. However, with that cute little hose for air intake the restriction is probably all right there.... Maybe some time when I get bored I'll do some calculations. But if you look at how big the intake hose going to the turbo is versus the car's intake hose with snorkel.... :-/ Even the amount of vacuum it creates at idle there at the snorkel. I'm almost tempted to buy another hose/snorkel and cut another hole in the air filter housing. :)

Oh yea, I'd like to see those pics too. :D

Sorry guys, I'd love to post those pics but I have no website. I could email them to one of you to put up if anyone is interested.
I agree that the throttle response feels quicker, particularly in the "fly-by-wire" cars, but also in the W126 and W129 I'm running now.
But for the ultimate Turbodiesel experience you have to "chip" it. That cost me about US$500 two years ago. That car is still running as a taxi with 250,000 miles on it now.

I'm in the process of making up a website for my 300D so I'll just host them there if you email them to me. :)

Is chiping just making the fuel curve that much better? The new Duramax (chevy & GMC diesel) can get some INSANE improvments by doing that. I really doubt this 300D will ever get chipped, but when I buy a newer one it most likely will. :)

On the 1982-1985 300D turbos, there is no chip in the first place!

BoostnBenz 08-27-2002 10:39 AM

Yea I was thinking that too, but even if there were this Benz isn't going to get one. Next one.... :)

hope this helps....

K&N filter: bad...let's dust in, with no, none, zilch, nein, niet, performance upgrade...

remus muffler: expensive...does not offer performance upgrade only makes the car's butt look good and toot good...

gsxr 08-29-2002 07:12 PM

mushedroom is right. On pretty much all Mercedes diesels, the K&N will make almost no differnece in power. Doc Booth proposed a good test. Remove your stock (clean) paper filter and do some 0-60 tests. Now put it back and do the same. If you see a measurable difference, fine, get a K&N. But so far nobody has done this and found any power with no filter (or a K&N). If you do please post the numbers & details, we all want to see it! Diesels operate without a throttled air intake, which may be part of the reason why there is no power gain. Some people claim that K&N lets in an unacceptable amount of particles, despite K&N's claims otherwise...

On a gas engine, the K&N can make a little more power, but not a lot... probably 2-5hp tops. This depends more on how poorly the stock intake tract is designed. Cars that get a 5-15hp gain usually have part of the intake removed and put a "cone" type K&N on, where a "cone" paper filter would probably make the same power (i.e., gain is not from filter element material, but the modified intake itself.)

Don't know anything about Remus, but all the performance upgrades I've investigated for MB's have a very very poor cost to HP ratio (stuff like mufflers, camshafts, etc.) Chips can make a big difference IF you are lucky enough to have a car that can be chipped - not all of them can!

Guys I base my answers on dyno test results. Changing between stock and sport (k&n, piperx, etc) air filters will at MOST increase rear wheel horsepower by 1hp. Its nothing.
Buy an aftermarket air filter if you like the reuseabilty of it and plan to clean/oil it periodically.
I've had K&N air filters on my tahoe and jeep wrangler, no power increase, just noise. Then put the K&N FIPK full intake on the tahoe. Still not much noticeable difference, other than looking cool. Aftermarket exhausts will only be worthwhile if its from the headers back. Cat back systems or muffler changes offer little or no performance gain, simply a cooler sound.

The chips are great. I just had my jetta turbodiesel chipped by Wetterauer, and the difference is amazing. +25 rear wheel hp and +40 torque lbs. On turbodiesels, chiptuning works by changing the fueling maps. Usually adding more fuel and extending the injection period, while also increasing boost pressures at given throttle points. This is all done respecting engine tolerances for long life.....with a good chiptuner..
