How much doe the engine in a 1999 CLK 430 weigh?

I am evaluating a donor car for conversion to electric drive.

Weight is (obviously) very important.

How much does the CLK430 engine weigh? how much does the transmission weigh? (I'd be replacing it with a lighter, no-clutch manual).

Thank you.

From elsewhere (thanks roncallo)...
Quote:
M117 alloy engine fully dressed and transmission is 661 Lb. Included engine and trans all accessories, headers, belt no fan or clutch
M117 alone fully dressed 515.
722.3 Trans 147
M113 Engine fully dressed 413 Lb.
M120 V12 fully dressed 666LB
722.6 Transmission 169
M116 (AKA 380SL engine) is probably 20 lb lighter than the M117

The engine weights you posted above put that car squarely within the realm of do-able for this project. If I can subtract 500 pounds for the engine and replace it with my 120 lb. forklift motor, that gets me a long way towards having capacity for batteries.

That link to the Electrical safety course might be useful. I may consider that, so thanks. I don't want to die for a hobby.

I'm using (more or less) the approach laid out by Damien Maguiar in his videos on Youtube where he converts a BMW E36 for under 1000 Euro. I'm going to end up spending more than that, but not a lot more (i'm hoping). I am in the process of refurbishing a Forklift Drive motor, DC series wound, and building the motor controller. The motor cost me 250, with replacement bearings 40 more. I'll probably buy a charging system just to ensure compatibility with charging stations that are popping up. I'm still researching battery technology, Lithium cells are the ticket, but what I buy and how I get there is yet to be determined.

I want a cool old car that i can plug in and get 40 miles of range and "average" acceleration. That would cover 90% of what I need in a car. I won't beat up any Teslas but on the other hand, I'm not dropping 60 large, either. I just want to have some fun.

start small and work your way up. Be prepared to remove things as you upgrade. Always go from one working setup to another.

Ages ago, I read a great article on swapping out an air cooled VW engine for an electrical motor. That was before tesla and the others came along.

If I were to do what you're doing, I'd be starting with a corvair. If you're going to be different, be really different.
