M119 Intake removal shortcuts/pitfalls

Can someone kindly give me instructions (shortcuts/pitfalls) for removing the Intake manifold on my 92 400e. Seems that (at 184k mi )I have developed a bit of a nasty miss that seems to be caused by the "donut" gaskets at the intake to block mating surfaces.
And for all you other high mileage 400e/500e er's that have been trying to track down that elusive miss/rough idle, if this cures mine. I'll let you know!

Aldedmon,

I recentlyl changed the gasket between the air intake and the engine. It is a very simple task, just follow these directions.

1. Remove the intake runners (Black tubes). To do this pull the tube away from the plastic filter body and then pull them away from the lighting assembly area. Note that you do not need to remove the plastic intake peice behind the lights.

2. Remove the plastic engine cover closest to the front of the car. This will pull straight up and out.

3. Now your ready to remove the air intake manifold. Begin by pulling the front of the intake closest to you up. Once you've pulled the front up start pulling towards you and up at the same time. The rear is held down by tabs which are fit snugly under retaining bolts. You should be able to pull it right out.

4. Underneath your filter box you'll find that gasket which costs $11.00 at Fastlane. Even if it doesn't look to bad it's worth it to change it and have piece of mind.

Now that you have the airbox off it might be a good time to check the air filters and determine if they need to be replaced.

Hope this helps.

Unhappy No not that one

I'm talking about the Intake MANIFOLD. I need to remove the entire Intake Manifold to replace the gasket between it and the engine block

Hmmm, don't think I can help you with that one.

Hopefully someone else can chime in that has done this before.

Actually I didn't realize that the gasket can cause problems with the idle, let us know what you find once you've determined how to do it.

I haven't done it on my E500 but I did take the intake off my 928. It shouldn't be too difficult - big picture - will need to remove wiring harness, fuel rail, throttle linkage, probably pull injectors, then unbolt intake. I assume throttle body and MAS can stay attached or you can pull apart. Don't drop anything into the heads while its apart (I put shop rags in the intakes) There will be hoses and vaccuum lines you will need to disconnect, just remember where they all go so you can reconnect. Take some pics beforehand if you can. Good time to replace rubber parts and anything else you can't normally get to (knock sensor(s)??). Can get injectors balanced/blueprinted. Make sure you use a torque wrench when you put the intake back on.

Good luck - have fun - and learn!

Yeah it can cause car to miss

Thanks Placo1 / Randall.

Placo, I believe that the gaskets are rubber and fit each runner individually. With the heat that these thing generate, the gaskets become hard/ brittle/warp and when they begin to seep air, the car will miss.
I, like everyone else, have replaced all the electrical stuff and had the car spec'd out via diagnosic scope. An Independent shop found the miss to be vacuum related and replaced a few gizmos. Closing off the leaks in other areas only exaserbated the leak at the intake. So the final "low tech"diagnosis was done by spraying a highly flammable substance all around the vacuum hoses and any leak would cause the substance(brake cleaner) to be sucked into the system, causing the car to leak. I sprayed and sprayed and finally hit paydirt both at the drivers front side of the intake and inside the intake near the same area infront of the TBA.(which is newly installed(by me) and removed/reinstalled by the independent when chasing down vacuum gremlins. I have the CD and have looked up the procedure for R/R but was just looking/hoping to get insight from someone who has done it maybe a time or two. I've done it on my 94 530i BMW V8 but its a little different , not unlike the 928 which also is a little different. It shouldn't be too difficult, we'll just see how it goes.
