New Project...JDM AMG CE!

I went and did a thing today. I bought a 93 300CE with no engine and trans, that is a Japanese import. Seemed like too cool of a car to let pass by. I also have access to a low mile '96 C36 that has significant body damage. Obviously the general direction of the build is to swap the 3.6 running gear gear into the CE body. That much will be simple nuts and bolts stuff. I don't have a solid plan on the styling Ill aim for but Im leaning towards a clean factory appearing look.

The things that jump out at me as different from a US delivery CE is the IR remote locking with receivers in the drivers door and trunk. Also no passenger airbag nor door speakers. It does have euro style headlights with the level adjustment knob by the light switch. It is left hand drive but with such low build numbers I have to wonder if MB built any as RHD. Anybody know?

I dont really know much at all about the Japanese market cars so if anybody has any resources, please share. I may start pulling the 3.6 from the total loss as soon as this weekend.

That's what I was thinking for my '92 300CE. Looking forward seeing the build, good luck!

Thanks! I got the donor pulled into the shop this evening and will commence pulling it tomorrow morning. I did some comparisons of wiring diagrams today. The 96 HFM will want immobilizer data and that looks to be one of the biggest hurdles so far. I really prefer not to transplant the DAS module if I can get away with it.

What would be the downside of operating the engine with the '93 ECU?

The only downside would be that the mapping would be different between the 3.2 and 3.6. I'm not afraid to pull a binary and try to figure out which maps are what and swap them into the older HFM. If the injectors are the same that shouldn't be a big deal, if they are different then it will be a big deal. The programming has a variable referred to as the injector constant which would need to be changed. Finding that variable would be nearly impossible without assistance. I should put checking the injectors in EPC on the list.

I got the 3.6 pulled this weekend. I want to do a bit of cleaning to the CE engine bay before stabbing it in. The insulation on the firewall is also poor, I need to figure out how to tidy that up as well. I'll also need to pull the trans cross member from the parts E320.. The 202 cross member doesn't interchange.

How does it happen that there is a 722.3 attached to that engine?

It's out of a '96 C36 and that's how it was built. The CE had a 722.5 , obvious by the wonky 5 speed shifter. There's no way I'm putting one of those turds back into the CE so the shifter will need to be swapped. The rear diff is also an issue, since it had a five speed the rear ratio is 3.69. The C36 has a 2.87 which is a little tall for my liking but it does have an AMG tag and that alone my just be worth more than a bit of off the line grunt.

Could it be that AMG was being very conservative in staying with the ".3", rather than using the ".6" which was used in some other W202 models?
If the ".3" is a 1st gear start version, then the 2.87 final should be quite OK.

I believe that this is a first gear start valvebody. If I do go with the 2.87 diff, it should be fine given the grunt of the 3.6

I will have to change the tail housing from the magnetic pickup to a cable drive unit. My luck, a lot of 722.3 cores went for scrap not that long ago.

This will be a cool build.

Where are yall finding these wrecked 3.6 cars? I've been looking for a 3.6 engine for my 190e forever and they're all super pricey.

This one was a customer's car that we serviced since about 30k mi. I got hit hard in the rear and pushed into the car in front of it. Front and rear AMG bumpers destroyed. The boss bought the total loss from the guy. That was 6 years ago. In that time only the wheels, headlight switch, and a vent were sold off of it. Not much demand for used 202 parts and no C36 cars in our current clientele. So it just sat until I pulled the trigger on this project.

After calling around to all the Mercedes shops looking for a core 722.3 to pull the tailshaft housing from, it was obvious I was gonna have to hit a U-Pull yard. Thankfully there was one cable drive speedo car listed in all the local yard's inventory. It was a pretty rough one but it had the part I need. The tailhousing came out without too much fight. The speedo drive / park gear slips right out along with the oil pipe.

This was the only thing I was waiting for to drop the engine/trans into the car. In addition to the speedo drive, the trans mount is also different between the coupe and the C36. I didn't want to futz with that in the car and this will be really easy to swap over in the shop floor. If all goes well, I may get the engine/trans dropped in tomorrow evening.

I got the cable drive tailshaft housing installed Monday. It was pretty straightforward. Today was the big day, I sat the engine in the coupe. The first issue was that the engine sat too tall in the engine bay. Apparently C36 arms and mounts stand a couple inches taller than the E class. Out to crawl under my donor and pull its mounts and arms. With the correct arms bolted on, it sits properly. That one task was the goal for the day. Now the tedious task of piecing it all back together begins.
