16V Clutch upgrade
Hi all,
I'd like to upgrade my clutch to handle the added power of the turbo. What are my options? Or is the stock clutch beefy enough to handle 300+ HP? What did the early DTM cars that used the Getrag tranny use? Thanks!

Use a Sachs Sport Clutch or clutchnet.com will make anything you want for pretty cheap. You can use a Clutch assy. and flywheel out of a 300SL or 2.6 190E Sportline. They are larger but I am not sure if they will fit in a 16vlv Getrag Bell housing? The Flywheel/ pressure plate assy. can be modified for more pressure too.

Thanks! Are the Clutchnet discs compatible with the stock pressure plate? How can I modify the pressure plate for more pressure?

Yes they are,
You can have your choice from stock to stage 4+. Solid or sprung puck. 3 or 4 puck. Organic, semimetalic, sintered bronze, kevlar, etc. Like I said what you want. Multi-disk clutches for 1000+ Hp. Depends on the use. Street, Racing only, Drag or road course, Street/racing. They will be able to help you based on your application or MB Autowerks has a Recommendation since they sell parts. The pressure plate to flywheel spacing can be machined, putting more compression on the springs. |

The 300SL is actually a modified version of the 2.3-16v's getrag tranny. The 190E 2.6 I believe used the same 300E tranny. I know the getrags have been rated to more then 350lb.ft. torque.
As for the clutches and stuff, ask bekkers, they should know.

Clutchnet suggested this clutch: "Fiber-Kevlar-Carbon" Lining, Marcel Drive Plate, Sprung Hub, Street-Performance Clutch Disc Composite material offered in steel backed facings for light and medium duty trucks and automobiles. Designed to replace Original Equipment clutch facings, this material will provide long service life, holding up well to fast starts and high RPMs. It can handle 550HP, costs $245, and works fine with the stock pressure plate. The stock 16V clutch doesn't hold up at all! Just put another one in this weekend. Would try that clutch disc(composite) with SPORT Sachs pressure plate.

Is the stock 16V pressure plate a Sachs Sport? The factory plate is a Sachs, correct? Later,

Let me know if you really need a clutch. I could build you one if you can provide me a core pressure plate. I could either do a dual diaphram or change the clamping pressure.
As for discs.....I have tried those kevlar disc and they are very sensitive. you burn them once and they are done for. They need a certain amount of pressure or they will fail. It is hard to beat the stock Sachs disc and change the lining to better material. let me know if you need more help. |

We would use a higher density fiber material. hopefully I can find the size, but since it is a common diameter it would not be hard.
usually we try to use AP lining. Modify customers pressure plate $125 to 150 Reline disc with hi-grade material $100 I might be able to find a 6 spring center that will fit the benz. the spline and diameter of the input shaft is common. I will check on this. |
