Restoring an AMG Hammer Wagon, my story Part 1

I recently thanked Dean Albrecht for making me aware of this forum. I wanted to introduce myself to the forum, as I’m sure I’ll need tons of advice (and moral support) for a long time.

About six months ago I purchased an AMG Hammer wagon. Well, technically a 1988/90 AMG 300TE 6.0 wagon. Car & Driver called it a “Mallet” wagon. There is much “historic” argument (if that’s not too strong a word to use) over whether the 6.0 engine is what is referred to as the Hammer engine (the M117 5.6 liter bored to 6.0), or is it only the 6.0 engine with the 32v head, or is it the original 4 door W124 body only, while all others are just CE 6.0s, TE 6.0s, SEC 6.0s and so on. I won’t pretend I know the answer to the question, although some original articles showed 5.6 liter Hammers with the 32v head, and an article in Automobile Magazine in 1988 profiled the first AMG Hammer Wagon

"The Hammer" was a term coined by an American automobile publication after test driving the 1986/7 W124 AMG M117 5.6 liter 32v sedan. 360 bhp and 510 Nm Torque Top speed 188 mph/303 kph.

There was another "Mallet" wagon that turned up not long ago and sold recently at Barret Jackson.

If the OP is who I think he is, then the vehicle was featured in the July/August 2003 Star and February 1990 Car&Driver....

Very nice 6.0 SOHC wagon built by Westmont...

Premerger AMG had three franchise "dealers" in the USA.

Westmont Illinois, BHMA ( Beverly Hills Motoring Accessories ) in CA and a location in Florida.

The Westmont location seemed to do some of the more then bolt on work compared to the other two locations.

IIRC, Dave's wagon was/is the Mallet as was termed by the C&D article.

So, w/ that in mind I like to call my car the Hammer Wagon..

Westmont was the headquarters for AMG NA.

Black and Blue

Jono,

Your blue car is the "Hammer Wagon", profiled in Automobile Magazine in 1988, built on a 300TD (hence the extra cost for diesel to gas conversion) for a fine canadian collector (Feingold)

Mine is the Westmont built Black SOHC wagon profiled in Car & Driver 1990 and The Star in 2003.

As you know, I tried to sell the car sometime back, but there seems to be limited interest in these historic AMG vehicles.

Dave

Dave

If I recall I may have had some discussion with you in August 08 about purchasing your TE.

Are you still considering selling...?

I'm in the process of finishing a C124 widebody "tribute" build which is taking much longer then I thought !!!

Regards,

Ed A.

Ed,

Yes, still considering selling.

email me anytime...

Thanks Dave..

Making a mental note for when I finish my C124 build.
Was hoping to have it at Starfest but it will be close !!!

When we communicated in 2008 I was trying to buy the W124 Hammer sedan from the same owner that sold Jono the Hammer wagon.
I offered him a bit higher then what Jono paid this year at auction for the TE, but in 2008 he wanted $10K more then my offer.
Ended up commiting to my C124 "AMG1" tribute build.

I tend to get sidetracked..earlier this year I was looking for a C126 AMG ( preferably widebody ) as I was inspired by Jay Manek's build with a NOS WB kit in the UK.
Got distracted and was offered Chip Ganassi's 08 CLK63 AMG Black Series which I purchased in February.

My problem now is space...
Have four useable garage slots, with one more that I need to get the floor done and considering a lift for the W113 in that bay.
That would give me six slots for six cars, but the G55K can sit outside ( it's a rugged truck ! ) which would give me an opportunity for another vehicle...

All this to say that we maybe speaking in the fall !!!
