Oil cooler
 

Does anyone make an oil cooler for the 190E 2.3-8vlv? If so where can I get one? If not has anybody made one?

U haul sells universal oil cooler..

I purchased a DERALE Transmission/Oil Cooler from JC Whitney
a little over a year ago for my 87 190E 2.3 8V. $110.66 plus
shipping. I live in Arizona and wanted a little more help
keeping temps down and I think the cooler has helped (2 Summers and going strong).
I also drilled holes in my thermostat which has also helped!
I have a non-drilled thermostat I use in what we call Winter here.
So far, I rarely see water temps higher than 100C.

Did the oil cooler you purchase bolt right up if so how did it bolt up and what is the quality?

Quality is good, Derale has a been around a long time.
The cooler can be mounted a couple different ways, I can
scan the instructions and a take a picture of my cooler then send
them to you. The oil cooler lines are run off an adapter between
the Oil Filter and housing. No leaks, no runs, no errors!

Thanks for the pictures but I have a couple more questions.

1. Where did you route the oil lines?
2. Did you have any clearance issues with the fan?
3. Do you still use the same oil filter?
4. Have you ran in to any leaks?
5. What is the part number for the oil cooler or can you send me a link?
6. How hard was it to install over and does it work?

The 1984 190E 2.3 uses a different oil filter & housing than the 1985 & later cars. If you have a 1985 & later it is very easy to adapr an oil cooler. USE a sandwich style oil filter adaptor from a VW that used the same style filter.

Mount the oil cooler in front of the radiator.

Do you know what years and which models of the VW have the adapter?

You can get the sandwich adapter from many sources. one of them is Rapid cool. Their catalog has a bunch of good items.
The adapter is the same for any Rabbit/Golf or BMW 2002, 320i.

I would recommend using aeroquip push-on clampless hoses and
fittings. We use the stuff in our race cars and street cars. Make sure you use the better quality hose. The cheaper hose only last 2 years. If you can;t locate the stuff let me know. or want more info. Earls also sells push-on but it cost more.

Rapid cool's catalog also list a bunch of good oil coolers. I like the Aluminum Borg-Warner plate units. I use those also for my water to air intercooler installs. Bugpack also sells the same coolers repackaged and a lot cheaper.
