2.3-16 rebuild idea
I posted this in Tech help too.
I would like my 2.3-16 to perhaps see some track use and be a street fighter. To do this it'll need to shed a few hundred pounds and gain some horses. I can tear stuff out of my car with the best of them. I have rebuilt engines before, but want someone to do my Cossie right. By right I mean with care and love, not crazy $$$ Anybody interested in rebuilding my 2.3-16? Or know of anybody who would be good? Rough cost estimates? It runs well, but blows some black smoke only when floored(no noticable lack of power). So, I'm assuming it would just need to be freshened up (new gaskets, valve job, perhaps new oversized pistons, little porting while in there). I'd like to bump my compression to at least the euro spec 10.6(?) from 9.7. My brother is able to get me a factory downpipe sans cats. It has 180000 on it. Thanks. Meek |

hey Meek,
Where are you? 2 16V owners just got their stroker engines on the dyno(check out the post from 190evo1). They are both in the Bay Area. My mechanic did one of the engine rebuilds and is very competent when it comes to 16Vs. Also, where are you getting the downpipe without the pre-cats. I want one. Later, Giancarlo

You can guy the precats yourself....it really isn't hard. Just get a long metal rod or something of the sort, remove the downpipe and just go at it and break them into small pieces. I think there is a company called timevalve or something like that the sells the downpipes.
If you did the rebuild yourself, it would cost probably around $1K. If you had a mechanic do it, he could charge you $2K and up for the job. You might want to look for already rebuild engines on the internet somewhere. Might save youself a bit of money.

New OE pistons go for $300 each, even aftermarket pistons will set you back $600 a set of 4. ON average a 16V rebuild will go for $3K, unless you want all new valves($1000. list) & OE pistons. Then you will spend $5k. On average I spend $2000 on a rebuild & spend abour 35-40 hours doing it. !16V parts are $$$!

M.B. DOC - do you have any suggestions for stroked 16v's? I posted about the 16v stroker thread and as I understand it, your ITS race car has more HP more than what these 2.6 stokers... Please advise.
Thanks, Joel
