380/450 std. trans.

This seems to be an almost exclusive 500 site but I will ask anyway. Does anyone know whether one can fit a 450slc std. trans. to an auto. 380slc? Appreciate your help.

I feel out of place posting this here, only driving a lowly 380SE.

That much said, I'll try to reply to this.

Since the 450SLC and 380SLC share the same C107 coupe body, there should be no reason why a transmission designed for one iteration of the model should not fit a slightly later iteration of the model.

However, I have no practical experience with this, but I can give you a reference of a shop that very well might be able to do this.

Contact Benz Friendz in Seattle, WA and talk to them about this. They threw a 2.3 liter four cylinder engine in a 300TD wagon; and we got the 380SE's engine worked on there after a timing chain breakage that bent valves, etc. They were willing to throw a 5.6 liter in the car (I wish!) but advised that rebuilding the heads and installing a new T-chain would be more cost-effective.

Anyway, here is their phone number: (206)762-7691

Hope this helps,

-Sam
