Thanks! Funny you mention wheels, as I may buy some as soon as this weekend.

Thanks, man. The hood, left front fender, driver door, and front bumper were all stripped and repainted from scratch last week. I had a little ding from some flying debris on the freeway. The shop did an amazing job. The car looks better than it did when I bought it.

Wink props

GORGEOUS car, Daesun!

Watch out for flying debris, at high speeds...

Your engine bay is so clean, you could fry an egg on your airbox
(if it was Teflon)...

This coming from the guy with perhaps one of the most well-executed custom 500Es in existence. I feel like I've finally arrived. Thanks for the compliments. I absolutely love your car, BTW. Nice wheels, nice drop, nice hood, nice steering wheel, etc. Great pictures too. How much was your Brabus steering wheel? It's killer, I'd love to pick one up eventually. Great touch.

I have no idea what caused the damage, as I don't even recall anything hitting my car. Then again, at 160 mph, it could've been a Q-tip. Not that I've ever actually driven at such blatantly illegal speeds...

Wink tach-tful

...never approached 160, eh?

mmm-hmmm.

; )

thank you very much for your compliments (the second compliment of the day - is it still Monday... or Friday, suddenly???); i would have to say that, while i do love my 500E, i would consider quite a few other W124s on this forum (and elsewhere) to be just as doted-upon as mine...

to answer your question, the Brabus Sport steering wheel is approximately $1100; it requires an electrical relay-mod to make the horn function - in addition to a 400mm, 1995 Mercedes E320 airbag (black) - for approximately $750.00 + any tax + shipping

keep up the good work - "stay tuned"

Never inhaled either.

Oh, I forgot to ask you. Can you comment on the Timevalve Y-pipe resonator replacement? Sound, performance, etc. Is it a worthwhile mod?

Y not?

Daesun:

I like the Y-pipe (just don't inhale) because it sounds richer at 3K+ RPM; moreover, it shaves off some extra weight...

It's not that expensive: personally, I recommend it, highly.

Scott, I spoke to shanta over at Benzsport about chips for our cars. She mentioned that you've had both the PAD and RENNTech software and that you preferred the latter. I currently have Neil's custom chip, which is similar to the PAD offering. Can you elaborate on the differences between the two? Is the RENNTech version worth the 400% premium?

Sorry to pick your brain like this, but it's great to be able to pose these questions at someone with firsthand experience. Thanks for your time.

RENNTech

Daesun,

Despite the fact that I'm (sadly) *NOT* being compensated by RENNTech for the free advertising, I do, in fact, much prefer their chip to the PAD offering.

Perhaps I'm psychologically biased, given the *HUGE* price difference I paid; however, I can say this, factually: my gas mileage *slightly improved* (2-3 MPG) with the RENNTech chip (as compared to the PAD chip). Marginal, but true.

Don't ask me why: I haven't delved into the binaries to figure out what may have caused the unforeseen benefit. Moreover, this side-effect may not manifest itself in others' vehicles. All I can say is that the RENNTech chip does the trick. I haven't dyno'ed my 500E, so I don't have any concrete data to share.

I'm not a certified MBZ Factory Technician; however, when it comes to brand loyalty and technology integration projects, my personality is such that I prefer to keep things as homogenous as possible with products from vendors who have stood the test of time. I value quality and industry-proven results. I like AMG and RENNTech not because they are the most expensive - but because they are the best at what they do, in my opinion. I don't performance-tune Mercedes-Benz vehicles, and they don't subnet Ethernet segments and implement BGP routing policies and fully meshed topologies in data-center environments.

; )

In summary, "caveat emptor" always applies - especially for something as difficult to measure as software performance. To me, it is analogous to asking someone how fast Windows XP runs on their (fill-in-the-blank) dual-CPU microcomputer, and if/why they prefer it to Solaris 8, running on a single-processor Sun SPARCstation 5. The context is the key, and (as such) the dependent variable.

I highly respect all tuners' efforts and product offerings. I think, empirically, it just boils down to individual preference. I apologize for not being able to provide more quantitative/less qualitative data, here; however, I am sure Bob Brady (@ RENNTech) can provide you specifics/a "white sheet" to sate your appetite for facts...

If you wish to chat, further, about this - you may e-mail me at: nemo@nemonis.net

Kind regards,
