E500 Rev Limiter - PAD Chip
Recently got my car back after having tranny rebuilt. Mechanic told me to come back after 30 days for a checkup. Told me to note any issues such as shift points or shift quality.
Well, the shift quality is perfect, no issues. But, I did find out that the PAD chip removes the rev limiter. I ran the car up to redline in first gear a coupla times and got up to 6500 RPM before I backed off. I finally kept my foot in it and hit 7000 before letting off. The car isn't shifting on its own out of first at full throttle - it used to shift around 6200 all the time. Just a note of caution if you're manually shifting! Car pulled strongly past redline. Anybody know the stock cutoff? Randy '94 E500 |

Randy Somewhere around 6150 rpm. Its not worth to take to 7000. Your not puling that much more. Its not worth the longevity of the engine. I took out my chip. With a free flow exhaust, modified intake, and first gear start. It doesn't make that much more of a difference to rev to 6000. Compared to 7000
But thats just choice I guess. Have fun

Believe me - I don't want to take it past its old 6200. I will have it adjusted soon after I've driven it a bit more and am sure there are no other issues.

Was waiting for someone to ask.
I started noticing that the car wanting to downshift too easily from 2nd to 1st when pulling out. Usually you won't grab 1st until kickdown but my car started dropping into 1st before getting to the kickdown. Very annoying! Then, when starting off and just cruising very slowly, say through a parking lot with very light throttle the car wouldn't upshift but would hang in gear and rev up to say 4K before it would downshift. Very annoying! This went on for a while and then I started losing 4th gear. I could get it into 4th usually by shifting into neutral and then back into D. Then one day, no 4th gear at all no matter what I did. Mechanic thought that the some o-ring wouldn't hold pressure enough to get it into 4th. Turns out almost all of the friction material was gone from the bands. He said the pieces had plugged up the pump. I was surprised at only 108K. I had done the fluid 15K miles earlier. He asked me if water had ever entered the tranny. Car came from OK and I have all service records so I assume not. Tranny had no leaks. While in there I had him replace the rubber flex coupling on the driveshaft. Randy '94 E500 |

randall same thing happened to my 4th gear on my 300ce. It just started not engaging all the time, the finally just wouldn't engage at all, and the friction bands or whatever they are were also completely gone.

Randall same happened to my 190e's original 16-year old box, because the radiator broke and water got into the fluid , I noticed your tech questioned this - make sure your radiator is not putting water into the tranny fluid!!
