Euro 190E 2.3 16v
To anyone, has anyone brought into the US a EURO 1985 190E 2.3 16v??? I am looking to bring my Benz over from Europe and want to know pros and cons.. It is the model that has the Citroen OEM'd hydrolic system that adjusts the height of the mobile to take it from street to track. It is a manual 6 speed, 230+ HP ride that just loves to go and go. There is no catalytic convertor so yes, I know that I will put a damper on the performance of the car, but just can not live with out it. Any help would be appreciated.

You have a Euro 16V with 230hp? How is that possible...I thought they only have 185 hp? What kind of modifications have you done? Also, how do you have a 6-speed transmission? All 16V's came with a 5-speed Getrag transmission from Mercedes(No 6-speed). I'm sure that trying to bring your car to the U.S. now will be very expensive. The grey market cars here now were brought over when the government wasn't as strict on that kind of stuff.
Good Luck, Giancarlo

You're right..
Yes it is a 5 speed, my mistake, there were a few models with various HPs produced.. The 1985 was a 230, according to my research and the last time that I looked under the hood. Did you bring your's over from Europe? Did you put a catalytic convertor on? And for how much?? How much did it cost for transportation? I am thinking that it is in the 5-6K range. Also, one last question , do you have the hydraulic system on your's? Have you had to have it worked on? I am curious becuase the only car in the US that has it are old Citroen DSs (Did they revise it on the latest SLK 600 series?) and I am sure finding a skilled technican is difficult.

Hi Michael,
Sorry, I didn't bring my car over from Europe. My 16V is a U.S. model with catalytic converter. It does have the self-leveling hydraulic suspension(SLS), but one of the shocks was bad, so I replaced the entire system with conventional Bilstein Heavy Duty shocks and Eibach springs. It can be very expensive to keep the SLS because parts cost so much. You might want to try posting this on the 190 Forum, as I know there are a few people with Euro 16V's that can tell you some of the problems they have with their cars in regards to registering it and passing smog checks. Here is the link190 Revolution Forum Giancarlo

I have a 1987 euro 16v. It was a royal pain in the butt. They put a cat in as well as door beams, head lights, buzzers, bumper re-enforcements, high brake light, reflectors in the side lights and a few other things as I recall. If you do it be prepaired for a head ache. I do not think I would ever do it again.

An 85 Euro 190E 2.3-16 non-cat had 185hp and with cats 177. Many years later EVO II had (d'oh I can't remember) 235ish. US 2.3-16's had 167. Many were brought over.

mgreene,
I own a Black Euro 1986 2.3 16V. My father purchased the car in Germany in late 1984 and and had his friend, who lives in Munich, drive it for 1,000 miles in order to bring it over as a used car. Back then the regulations were much less restrictive than they are now. But he made sure that he recieved most of the European parts that had to be changed, like the headlights. And immediately swapped them. The car has the self-leveling system and brand new 17"x7.5" silver poished EVO II wheels. It also has the four headlight settings with the aiming control on the dash to the left of the steering column. But I also have to disagree with your 230+ hp estimate. they do only have 185 without a cat, and 177 with. There were NO exceprtions other than the EVO II which is a completely different car. The EVO II came standard with a little over 230 hp and was the highest factory performance model Mercedes ever made from a 201. The racing versions that competed in the German DTM series were modified to about 340 hp. Where did you do your "research" and what would you find "under the hood" that would tell you your hp rating???

Hey yhliem,
Do you know any more about this AMG Powerpack option? Any specifics as to what was done to the engine? Thanks, Giancarlo

He might have mistaken Hp with Kwh. I have an 85 Euro and it's I think 187hp and 240kwh.

Granted, it's an extra 40hp, but i wouldn't be surprised if they bored and short-stroked the engine and reprogrammed the ignition. I'd suspect that the mods made to the AMG powerpack are fairly similar to the internal mods one would find in the Evolution II.

That would make sense, I'm sure that there were a very select few who preferred the less "glitzy", less "showy" 16V body style but wanted that extra power.
