Anyone interested in front 320mm SL600 brakes?

Hi all,

I found a set of almost new 600SL front brake calipers and rotors for sale. These are the 320mm directional rotors used on the 1994-98 500SL and late 93-94 500E, as well as the 600SL up to 1998. I've been trying to find out if they will bolt up with no mods to the older (86-89) W124 hub & knuckle. Nobody seems to know for sure, I don't know if anyone has even tried. [According to the EPC, it may work, I'll post the details if anyone asks.] Anyway, if they don't bolt up, I'm not going to "make" them fit by swapping on the 500E hub & knuckle.

My question is, how much are you guys (the 500E nuts ) willing to pay for a set of these calipers & rotors? Because if they don't work for me, I'd sell them. But I don't want to pay much more than I could re-sell them for. If you don't want to post publicly you can send me a private email at the address below. All I have found in the archives are people selling the older 500E brakes (300mm, non-directional) and those prices probably don't apply, since the 320mm stuff is a LOT harder to come by. Any info would be appreciated....

Email: rc51@cableone.net

Thanks!

They won't bolt up to your W124 directly, your looking at major mods to use these. I researched the 500E/600SL options for my W201. In your case, the easy bolt on upgrade is the 400E/E420 setup only requiring cutting of the rear dust shield (or you can remove it if you want to dink with the parking brake)

See, that's what I thought too. HOWEVER! The E420 brakes are used on the E320. The E320 uses the same hub, knuckle, and steering arm as my old 300D. The E420 and E500 use the SL500 hub & knuckle. Therefore, the E420 brakes should bolt on (no mods) to older (86-up) W124 models. It also makes it look like dimensionally the SL500/600 and E500 brakes should also bolt up, since the E420 and E500 use the same hub, knuckle, & steering arm. I suspect the V8 models use the SL parts because they are stronger, not because there are dimensional differences.

But again, I can't find a single person who has had a 320mm caliper & rotor in their hands and personally attempted to bolt it up to a 6-cylnder car (only the V8's use the SL hub/knuckle.) All I ever hear is that so-and-so says this, or that the hub & knuckle are "different" (which I already know - but not HOW they are different.) Now, doing this on a W201 is another story, I haven't investigated that at all... but if E420 stuff bolts up, it sure looks to me like the 320mm stuff will too (under 16 inch wheels or larger).

Details of all the part numbers for each model are here (save to your desktop, then open with Microsoft Excel - may not open in your browser

600SL brakes

I'm interested - especially in the front calipers/rotors.

Perhaps we can discuss price, offline: sysop@tightlink.com

Kind regards,

Sorry... the seller (originally from eBay) found this site yesterday and sold them (for more than min bid on eBay) in a matter of hours. Oh well. If he hadn't, I would have bought them and tried them on my car, since there were numerous buyers interested at my "break even" point. Bad timing, I tell ya.

Interesting side note is that he has a 500E with the 300mm brakes, and was warping the 30mm rotors under hard use. He bought these 320mm units as an upgrade, and removed them after 5kmi because the extra weight hurt handling! Funny, most people go the other way around (small to big). Neil V claims the 320mm brakes weigh *ten pounds* more per side over the 300mm stuff! That's a lot of unsprung weight to add...

Regards,

thank you

I appreciate the follow-up.

I'm going to get the RENNtech (14") front and (12") rear kits, as soon as possible.

I was perusing the new E500 lineup at Mercedes-Benz of Oakland, yesterday, and the front calipers on that car are HUGE!!!

VERY nice / motivational...

Hey Scott,

I was checking out the photos on your website (s-l-o-w-l-y). I was curious why you installed standard Euro lights, instead of the E500 Euro lights that have driving lights instead of fog lights? Now you have two sets of fogs (on headlamps and in lower bumper) and no auxiliary driving lights...

(I'l also pulling in the 118MB movie... gonna take a while at 2.5K/sec, though...!)

old pics

Actually, those pictures are approximately 1 year old; currently, I have the European lights.

I'll post newer pcitures/videos, ASAP.

Please check my website, periodically, for updates.

Thank you,
