Custom blower for 500E/E500?

Check out Carl's (from Bergwerks) post over at Benzsport:

Possible 500E blower

I said I would even do it, but didn't have that much interest.

My price wouldn't be $7,000, though. I think that is on the lean side.

I might be interested. However, not this year.

I'm interested in 2003.

RSVP / thank you,

From the Benzsport thread:

"We (BergWerks) has tried several times to get information from Koenig about their blower kit for the M119 with no luck. They don't seem to have any interest in sending it our way.

If enough folks are interested, we'd consider developing a blower kit for the 500E / 500SL crowd. We started working on a kit for the SEC crowd with the M117 engines, but cancelled it given lack of real, "I'll buy it" interest (plus Mosselman still makes there it). If we could get a handful of folks willing to commission the project, we could build a nice system that provides around 100HP at low boost for $7k or so.

Obviously we'd put together some more solid figures before calling this a real project (or take anyone's deposits!). At the end of the day, it's pretty much custom R&D that a group of customers could share the costs of amongst themselves rather than bearing alone.

We'll try to flush out a strawman of the project to get some firmer feedback from interested parties. More to come...

Truly interested folks, please send me an email at Info@Bergwerks.com and we'll start a group email list for this."

If nothing else, it's worth some discussion! And if the project does pan out, $7k is not a bad price for 400+ hp.

I'm In

Feel free to use my car as the beta tester if this gets off the ground.

After Watkins Glen in October it will be time to get out the 4x4 and put her away for the long, cold winter.

Keep me informed.

BLOWER

7K is a steal compared to other low HP MODS !!!!!!! at those numbers U can count me in;)

How is "low boost" being defined here? I have grave doubts about the ability of any engine to sustain forced induction on the dishwater currently masquerading as unleaded premium in California (91 octane). At least not without exotic intercooling or water injection or the like.

Well, Kleemann blowers typically run at 0.5 bar (~7 psi) on 91 octane gas with no problem. Then again, they have one of the best intercooler designs on the market. I agree that the system would have be intercooled effectively. But if this can be done, 0.5 bar of boost would reasonably add about 100 hp. Kleemann takes a 302 hp 5.0L V8 up to 500 hp with 0.5 bar of boost (this can be attributed to their phenomenal intercooler).

This is pure speculation, don't hold me to any of it. But it seems reasonable, doesn't it?

I would be interested in the spring of 2003. Put me down for info.

Any more progress on this?

I get 98 octane over here :D :)

Would it fit

If this blower would also fit on 400E/E400s then the overall R&D costs could be divided as more would join in the devolpment for a wider variety of models. Wonder how much the 400E could pump out then, probably more than a stock 500E!

I love power!!

If someone is handy in doing the CAD/CAM work to develop a new intake manifold that can take the Kleeman blower and integral intercooler, then all M119 "LH" cars could benefit (e.g., 1990-1995 R129 500SL; 1992-1995 W124 400E/500E; 1994-1997 W140 500SEL)

FWIW, the key to the efficiency of the Kleeman superchargers is their built-in (no ducting needed) intercooler with seperate water-pump. Allows for greater boost without fear of detonation. The design concept is so good the latet AMG supercharged engines use the same principle.

Yes, a 400E with the lower compression-ratio would most likely make more power than a 500E, although the extra liter of displacement of the 500E might still give it an edge.

Kleeman rates a blown W210 E55 AMG higher than a blown E430.

I NEED another 100hp, otherwise I'll be forced to admit that the W211 E55 is a better car! :p

Something I wouldn't say for the W210.

Are you guys set on blowing the car (supercharing)? Maybe turbo charging would be a better option because fewer things have to be made to fit the blower such as brackets, routing new belts for driving it, etc.

Turboing you could join the exhaust manfolds come to a turbo, intercooler, etc.

I saw this place online they do custom turbo installs.
www.forcedairtech.com

If I had a 500E I would probably turbocharge it, I dont think it would really be that hard, and I would put the intercooler where the grill is.
