What brand synthetic?

Take the poll...what brand of synthetic oil do you use?

What brand of synthetic?

Thanks!

Glen,

I use Mobil1 engine oil, and Redline for my transmission and Differential. The question is which one are you referring to?

Motor oil

Bernie,
Ah, I should have made myself more clear. I'm curious about engine oil, what brand of synthetic motor oil is most commonly used?

Thanks for the feedback.

Synthetic Oil for 300E w/148k???

Hey Guys...what do you think about changing to synthetic oil for my 300E w/148K miles...on my last oil change, I went to 20W-50 castrol (from 10W-40) and as expected I've noticed a loss in mpg...I've heard in the past (correct or not?) that by changing to synthetic in older engines, seals and/or gaskets that are accustomed to the fossil stuff could be adversely affected...engine is very tight, no leaks, excellent compression, etc. ...experience preferred, opinions accepted...as always, thanks, Bill

Bill,

I started using Castrol Syntec 5W50 in a 1979 300SD I bought with 160,000 miles. I don't know what oil was used previously.

Oil use decreased from 3 quarts in 10,000 miles to 1 quart in 10,000 miles after 30,000 miles of use. There were originally a few small oil leaks but they disappeared.

So I would recommend Castrol Syntec for your car as it has worked for me.

untrue. the only "adverse effect" would be that the synthetic, being thinner in nature, may expose existing leaks that were previously unnoticed.

Thanks for the input...now that we've established that I'm not going to hurt my engine, another question...I will go w/either Castrol or Mobil1 - opinions? My question is regarding which weight oil should I go with? I live on the NC coast in a pretty moderate climate (coldest temps here may dip into the mid to high teens only on very rare occasions) Whaddya think?...again, thanks...Bill
