fuel consumption

I am thinkin about buying a mid to late 280se(L) upto 500se(L). does anyone know the best model to go for for good fuel consumption. I know you will probably say to go for the one with the smallest engine!!! which model has the best power for the size of car. some people have told me that the 280 is guttless. I have also been told that the fuel bills won't be that different from the 420 upto the 560. Is this true. I am not gonna be nailing the car, just cruising!! I have found a 500sel for sale really cheap, it is an 86. Where is the commen rot points, and what should i be looking for when viewing. Many thanx
