Question C180 1994 vs C180 1997

I drive a 1994 C180 and it is like an old man especially when accelerating and it really struggles to keep up speed. I test drove the 1997 C180 2 days ago at a car yard and it runs like a sports car, everything was so tight and felt like a brand new car. Mine is 190,000kms and this one is 101,000kms. When I stepped on the accelerator of the 1997 car, it does not react instantly with a pause of up to 5 seconds then it bursts forward like a turbo charged car and goes like a bullet with 2 big adults in the car. Mine will make a hell of a noise revving up and moves a bit sluggishly up to speed, but there is no thrill like in the other car. Can mine be on the way to the junkyard or the other has had some "illegal" and non-standard chip installed? The salesman can't say.

I think there is quite a difference. Your 94 C180 has a 4 speed auto that starts in 2nd gear. The 97 u drove has a 5 speed auto that has an adjustable driving program that drives according to speed and holds gears up hills etc. The 5-Speed starts in first for more spirited driving. I think also they changed some things to the motor for the 97 update which made it more free-revving. Funny thing is, power of the 94 and 97 is the same.

Unhappy '94 vs '97 C18o

Thanks Christian. Can I have my ECU swopped over from the 1997 C180 and enjoy the same spirited driving without any major mechanical or electrical overhauls??? It would be a really great improvement. If I had known earlier about this wonderful update, I would have stayed clear of the 1994 model and bought the update purely for the improvements. Thanks.

Well im not too sure on this. I did have a 97 C200 Elegance with the updated features. Im pretty sure the engine is the same as in the earlier models, ie DOHC, 16valves etc. Im not sure about whether changing the ECU is ok. Can someone shed some light on this? Also, the 5-speed auto is a treat but I think it would cost too much to do. If your after something quicker or more effortless, I suggest u upgrade to C240 or even a C280. I upgraded or some may say downgraded because I went and bought a 94' E280. Ive never looked back. Its a different story to a C-Class altogether

Talking '94 C180 vs '97 C180

Thanks Christian. I was looking at a 300E which belongs to a relative, but unfortunately it has been handed down to a family member. My boss had one, but was having continuous problems and the failed radiator was the final bell. He went and got a brand new one this time and its fantastic, he says. Well, I will have to keep dreaming or strike it rich soon so I can get my gold coloured C200 Kompressor or the C320. Cheers and a Merry Christmas to you all!
