555 AMG...What is it???

Was tooling along on I-10 today in my 500SL, heading back from Biloxi, and was passed by one of these. Never heard of such a model.

Pretty certain it was a 555, but I only got a 'fleeting glance' because it blew by me like I was sitting still (at 85 MPH). Traffic prevented me from catching up to it...assuming I could have...but it was an impressive automobile.

Just curious if anyone has any knowledge of the 555 and what goes into it.

Thanks,

I would assume you saw a S55 AMG, here is a link to the official MBUSA S55 AMG page:

Gilly,

Looks like the S55 is what it was. As mentioned, I only got a glimpse of him as he passed. The guy hung behind me in the outside lane for proably ten miles and I suppose he must have been getting late for an appointment. ha!

Thanks for the link.

I drove an S55 recently; I felt it was kinda slow, and said so as I looked down....I was passing thru 140MPH

Talk about easy speed! Car was unbelievably composed...very impressive for such a large car

Its owner was impressed, too-he'd never seen 100 in the thing! My advice to him-buy an S430

357 bhp 5.5 V8 as per CLK55, E55, CL55 et al
except from now (2003) on, they have the supercharger too, as per SL55, so leap to 500bhp

Which makes you wonder, would you rather have this 500bhp supercharged S55 AMG V8, or the alternative Turbocharged S600 V12 - prices are very close, the V12 has more torque.

I would go for the AMG - better handling (lighter engine), nice sound (never loved V12s, but haven't heard MBs), no turbo-lag.

The turbos on the S600 are very small and run at a low boost, so lag or even the turbos are hardly noticeable on the car. I heard all of this of course, so I can't be sure.

Would you say freeway acceleration trounces our 5.0L M119s? Those 5.5L powerplants are no joke.

Never broke 100 in his megabuck AMG? If youth is wasted on the young, are sports cars wasted on the cautious? Nothing against your friend of course.
