No, you won't get more power. It will just seem like it since you will have better stop and go or low speed acceleration due to the lower gears. You will also sacrifice some gas mileage and high speed acceleration. So if you do most of your driving in the city, then a diff swap would be in order, on the other hand, if you do most if your driving on the highway, I wouldn't touch it. Another thing to consider, would a diff swap worth at least $1500 (if not more) be worth it for your car? Is your car a pristine example that you take a lot of pride in? Then it may be worth it. But if it's just an ok-shape runaround that may have been neglected at some point in its life, it may not be worth the trouble or the cash. You are the only one that can decide that though.

Just a nit, but "high speed acceleration" won't suffer - acceleration at all speeds will increase. Top speed, however, may decrease (depending on whether the car is aero limited or power limited). My guess is that a 380SL's top speed is power limited because other 107 cars have higher top speeds with the same body. Gas mileage probably will suffer, as you mention, but anybody who wants better performance has already voted on the importance of mileage. |

What's the ratio in your 380? I have a transplanted differential in my SEC that I got from an old 380 with a 3.27:1 ratio. That's pretty high for mercedes diffs. Massive acceleration over the 2.47:1 I used to have but lost a lot of top speed. My car is supposed to be able to do 156mph but I bet its more like 120 now.
