W124 E36 AMG Wagon

I hear these are very very rare, but the guy living opposite me has a 1995 E36 AMG Wagon. Apparently there are very very few around, I think only 15 - 20 in right-hand drive in the UK. It's in nice condition with around 95k miles, and silver on silver with black leather and AMG monoblocks. I can see if I can get some pics if you like.

Presumably, it's the same 3.6 M104 24v engine as Neil has put into his 360TE AMG? Or did Neil's car leave the factory with that engine?

Russ- my 1988 360TE AMG is a "one-off". If I had a 1993-1995 E320T the conversion would have been easier, but I decided to upgrade my 1988 wagon/estate because it was in such good condition.

If you can, please post pictures of your neighbor's E36 wagon/estate, esp. the engine bonnet.

I'd like to see how good my "interpretation" was.

BTW- I don't know of the E36 AMG had the same HP/Torque rating as the C36 M104 engine that I placed in my wagon (268HP/276 torque).

Pics here:
http://www.silcom.com/~neilv/sportline

The W124 E36 never made it to the "colonies", just like the W210 E55 wagon/estate.

Guess, I might have to make one of those as well . . .

Sure its not a C36 estate/wagon? I've seen several pics of those in Europe. Obviously none of the AMG wagons ever make it to the U.S. so I'm not real versed in them. If its a W124 body then strike me down! I thought all of the AMG W124's had the 6.0L quad cam or 6.0L SOHC. The W210 estates should have came in E50/E55 form. Interested to hear more though... Maybe Neil's not alone!

I've yet to see a quad-cam AMG 6.0L M117 engine in a W124 wagon.

I've only seen the quad-cam 6.0L M117 in a W124 300CE body. Too bad the car never sold- I think it's still in Nevada.

I've attached a shot I found a while back of a Euro AMG E36 Wagon.

Neil- the first Hammer wagon was built in the US in Westmont, IL. It had the Quad cam 6.0 liter, and since it was built on a diesel wagon (300TD), the only available W124 wagon platform at the time (1987) it required a rewire of the entire car and it cost in excess of $180,000. Apparently, the AMG home office thought they were nuts for attempting it, and it took as much time as three Hammer sedans to build.

It was written up in Automobile magazine 1988- I have the article, if I had the technical prowess I'd actually scan it in.

It has been my inspiration since first seeing it in 1988, and since Jean Lindamood voted it the best all around car if you could have one car for everything. I guess she never encountered rain or snow in Michigan.

Dave- make a color copy of the article and send it to me (email me for my mailing address), then I'll scan & post it.

Got any engine pictures of that Euro E36 wagon?

AMG 3.6 conversions

Sorry, no engine pics, just the gray car and some shots of a black one. There was also a Sportline Wagon available in europe with a beautiful interior including rear folding seats with bolsters. Almost purchased the seats on German ebay a while back, but seller didn't want to ship overseas.

I have an Italian AMG brochure that shows an AMG 320CE 3.6 and a Cabrio 300CE 3.4. Shows the engine as a unit but not in the car.

Click the link to email me your address, or I can fax it to you, since they only managed one exterior shot in the article and no engine shots, so color is unnecessary.

Dave, what is the month and title of the article you are refering to? I never knew they build a quad cam in a Wagon, I thought they only did the 6.0 SOHC. BTW yours is 6.0 right. When you had everything out did you measure the pistons to 100mm. I dont know if you looked at the bottom end or not, but the piston skirts barely clear the 560 crank. Those recaro seats are nice...=)

I've heard of a few E36's as either converted W210 E320's or possible low production versions but never a W124 version that wasn't somebody's custom project.

Hammer Wagon article

Automobile, January 1988 issue, cover "America picks its favorite cars", article is titled "Super-market Sled" by Jean Lindamood

I think this blue car may be the same one- it was Blue with a gray interior

It's definitely a genuine, original '94 or '95 W124 E36 AMG Wagon. I've spoken to the guy about it too, it's not a badge-engineering job, but they are very rare and he had a hard time finding one. Would have considered 500E but for LHD and no wagon version.
But it doesn't have recaro seats, just standard black MB leather interior, with 2 rear seats too.

I'll see if I can stop him again and maybe get some pics; the car is always parked out of sight.
