Some probs finding the asr module :)

I've some problems finding that ASR unit. As pointed out in the Pics of the RENNTech kit there should the ASR named on it. However, I cant see that.

I've made a picture of the computers under that black cover. Maybe anyone can point me to the right computer?

My car is a 1991 500SL. Thanx!

@ michael: Do you still selling those kits? Are you willing to send them outside the US ?

Regards,

Leo

Leo,

I actually still have the parts for a few more kits kicking around. If you'd like one, email me and we'll figure out how to get you one

Michael,
I just got around to installing your kit and all I can say is WOW!! Thank you for doing the kit and I thought the instructions were very easy to follow. I have a feeling I'm going to be on a first name basis with the folks from Tire Rack!

Help REDUX.

I'm on my 2nd day of 500E ownership and I'd like to get more info on this kit / system you came up with Micheal. Right now the ice on the roads makes the ASR a blessing but come time for some socially irresponsible activities.. I'd like to be able to disable the ASR for max hooliganism. Just because I'm in my 40's does not mean I've forgotten what an RWD V8 powered car can do to a set of tires...

Thumbs up

Will a setup such as this work on a 400E with ASR?

Thanks!

Yes. Identical setups on the 400E & 500E.

1993 500E ASR - Light on Dash & Car Limping

I just tuned into this string, while looking for resolution to a problem just experienced. During 2 of the approximately 10-12 cold start ups, in the past week, I experienced a situation where I start the 500E up cold, drive a couple hundred feet, hear a whirring sound under the hood, then see the ASR Light lit up with the car is limping. So I shut it off, restart the engine, and it works fine. My local independent MBZ mechanic says I need to replace the throttle actuator at a cost of $1500. If there is a more economical means of solving the problem, or of just defeating the ASR altogether to fix it and obtain some better performance, then I'm game. Any suggestions are welcome.

The throttle actuator is a fairly common failure on the M119 engine. If it really is going bad, you don't have a lot of choice in replacing it. I think it costs about $900 wholesale, plus labor. This is not something you can just disable.

1995 500E ASR Light & Throttle Actuator

Thank you very much for the advice. My mechanical sophistication ends with the technology in the 1970's, so I don't even try to do anything involving computers or other electronics. My question, therefore, is whether this is a simple matter of removal and reinstallation of parts that are visible, which I can do myself, or does it require electronic sophistication or other delicate areas of special training/experience? Thank you again.

Michael,
I have a 1993 SL500 with the "snowchains" ASR and would be very interested in obtaining that kit of yours, do you still have any available?

A FYI for anyone wanting to get the ASR Off switch to work correctly and light up when ASR is off.

Pin 1, -12 ground
Pin 2, +12 switched power
Pin 3, +12 to relay to energize it.

Now we know that this configuration works, but the ASR light won't come on. So, take the switch apart, remove all the loose parts (so you don't lose them), remove the black plastic frame from the switch contact board, there are some grey tabs that hold in in place. Once you have the switch contact board out of the frame, use a solder gun to unsolder the LED from Pin 1 and the resister. Once you have this done, carefully remove the LED and rotate it so the wire that was soldered to pin 1 not is touching the resister (rotate 90 degress basically). You may need to bend the LED wires a bit so the LED will sit in its holder and give you the proper alignment of the LED leeds so you can solder them back in place. Once you have this done, your ASR light will come on with ASR in the off position.

I just finished this part of my ASR project last night.

Rik,
Are you using a standard R129 ASR switch? It's my understanding that the LED is used to light the switch for night illumination, not to indicate whether ASR is on or off. AFAIK, the only indication that ASR is off is the "ASR" light in the lower right of the dash cluster which WILL illuminate when ASR is off.
