what do you think of these for a 500E?
I've been debating now for a couple of weeks about the 18" 2 piece AMG's but I would like to get everyones opinion on these wheels. I am thinking of getting 17x10's all the way around, is this possible? if so what size tires for a non-lowered car and what offset would i get if I want the wheels to be flush with the fenders and no rubbing and I would like to fill the fenders I'm thinking getting more of a sidewall instead of lowering the car.

nice rims, although they may look kind of odd on a car with as much visual mass as the 500E. i'd think that delicate spindly looking rims in the 500E would look sort of like a girl with really skinny legs.
secondly, i think 10's would be far too wide for the front. i wouldn't go above 8.5 in front

I agree - and well-put yhliem! The 'visual mass' of the 500E (and all W124's for that matter), compliments a wheel of a similar style. This is why monoblocks, or a simliar style look so great on Benz's. I'd think these would look a little to 'BMW' or even a tad 'ricey' a little too thin and lean compared to the broad, muscular, stance of the 500E.
While I do like the style of these rims, they don't suit a Benz that well imho. Plus, those thin spokes reveal alot of suspension/brake components - you'll soon be wanting to upgrade to cross-drilled rotors, painted calipers, etc to dress them up to match the wheels . Not a bad thing, but a potential increase in costs. Regards, - Ryan

Those wheels are very similar to the O.Z.'s I have on my E500. Personally, I like them but I know it's all a matter of personal preference.

vcci,
Go with what you like, everyone has a preference regarding wheels and yours will certainly be different. Glen's wheels look great on the car and pictures don't do it justice. Caliper paint will be a necessary upgrade but that's cheap and easy. Make sure those wheels are rated to handle the weight of your car, there are several out there that aren't so be careful. Regarding size, if going with 17's stick with 17 x 8.5" up front to insure no rubbing. I'm also debating about wheels but it looks like it will be a while before I have to make any decisions. Let us know what you decide.

I would insist that these be FORGED centers.
Many wheels do not have the ruggedness, reliability of Mercedes OE wheels. Please see my posts here (scroll-down): Which Wheel to choose for 500E? :-) neil 1988 360TE AMG 1993 500E |

This is what happenned to my friend's BBS wheels at the "Street of Willow" when he hit a berm.
This is why I would insist on FORGED wheels on anything aftermarket. The same cars (WRX) hit the same berm on STOCK (OE) wheels, and nothing happenned. Repeat to your self: OEM wheels are not the same as OE . . . :-) neil 1988 360TE AMG 1993 500E Last edited by ke6dcj; 01-28-2003 at 11:00 PM. |

Not to get too off topic but do we know the driver/owner of said WRX?
Just curious....Lee |

Not bad rims V...forget what we think; its what you will like.
They don't really compare to those 2 piece AMGs though...do they? They probably are a boat load cheaper... |

Here is my new wheel for my E500. I don't have them yet, but I am ordering them. 18x8.5 front and 18x10 rear with a 2.5 inch lip in the front and a 3 inch lip in the rear.

Nice looking wheels! What brand? Tuv approved? Load rating?
FWIW I bought my rims largely 'cuz I saw a picture of durability testing in an MBZ brochure where they parked a sedan RIGHT next to a curb, 0 space in between tire & curb, then turned the steering wheel to full lock. Ouch. That said, IMHO if a wheel can take that kind of abuse, it's my kinda wheel-in the interest of your safety, make sure you buy a STRONG rim (forget weight on the street, you ain't gonna notice 2 lbs of unsprung weight in a 3,850 lb. car)

Hot damn! Those are nice. I like your choice of lip size too...I hate the normal lip in front and 3 inch lip in back, look. With 2 inches in the front you should have a nice balanced look. Pictures are a must! Please!
Hey vcci I doubt you'll be going auto crossing and if you do you wouldn't be taking those nice wheels with you...get what ever the heck you want. If you like it, just check the weight restrictions and like a subwoofer get the best you can afford. |

Driver/owner of said WRX is Rob, aka "RadRex" at www.myimprezawrx.com
He's a Santa Barbara local, I doubt you know him less than "7-degrees of seperation". :-) neil 1988 360TE AMG 1993 500E |

Since these are 3 piece wheels I might get have them in a gunmetal finsh with a polished lip and the polish rivets of course I think that "may" look good on my E500 sinceit is brillant silver. We shall see. |
