I think they made the 97 breathe a little better then the 96 or 95. Soemthing to do with emissions or something. I think??!?

whan/Rocky,
Little secret...8HP is the variance between cars off the showroom floor, ambient conditions, moonphase (j/k), etc. The rated difference could be as little as marketing for the last year. The biggest advantage of the 97's over the 95's is the 722.6 automatic 5-speed tranny. Some cars just run stronger than others regardless of year and "rated" power. The 5-speed lets the I6 stay in the meat of its powerband and allows kickdown from anyspeed to any possible gear NOW!. The 722.4 automatic 4-speed can be a bit of a dunce in comparison.

Hope this helps...Lee

Whan,

Yes, it's the same as the tranny in 500Es. And as for HP rating, Lee really has a good point there. I don't know if I should start a new topic or not, but reading through the this board, and you will notice that even amoung 500Es, they have different performance figures. Hm, maybe it's a "tradition" of MBs!!??

Happy Motoring.....

Actually if you read the manual the c36 was fitted with the 722.3 transmission. This was the same number designation as the Big 6's and the V/8's.
The latter ones were the 722.6 that all MB's got from the c230 to the S500.

In reading a USA model designation card for passenger cars up to M.Y. 1998, it lists the C36's tranny as 722.4 or 722.6. It lists the 500E tranny as 722.3. It would be logical that the C36 would get the high torque load tranny 722.3 from the 500E and other big-grunt motor cars. In double-checking the model designation card it lists the C36's tranny as .4/.6. I'll bow to the wisdom of the Benzmac on this one though. It would be more logical that the .3 would be in there...
