w124 AMG/Brabus/Lorinser/Renntech modifications
 If say for arguements sake i had an M104 (300CE-24V) engine....
I have the engine sitting on the ground next to my car. I have the head off the block at the local boring shop. Its coming back soon all nice and ported and polished. Then its going up to the local exhaust shop and the nice guys up there are gonna magic up a nice set of polished extractors, with a full hi-flow system to follow. Now comes the tricky part the engine is still only 3 litres - what to do? hmmm.... I have heard that one of the big perfromance houses did a nice little conversion that stroked the engine from 3.0 to 3.6 of something like that. realistically is that attainable? or is it all bullstuff? if it is attainable what do i do about doing it? I need answers boys and girls... help me. :(down here in Australia there are no people who know these things so i'm counting on the greater population of planet earth. I know people say that the m103/m104 is a rather performance dead engine. WHATEVER. thats only for the narrow minded there is always more power out there. you've just gotta find it. or let someone else tell you where it is. -thanks in advance:D |
Mike,
there have been some 3.6 liter conversions based on both, the M103 and the M104 engine, done by Brabus, AMG, Oettinger and maybe others. Last week there was a Brabus 3.6 M103 (from a 4matic) on ebay.de that sold for only 1640 Euro. Have a look at it: The problem is, that Australia is so far from Europe :D Modificaton of a M103/M104 for more displacement is difficult because you need another crankshaft to get more stroke and there is no easy swap like for some bimmers. There is no space to enlarge the bore more than a few millimeters (from 88.5mm to 90 mm or 92mm) to get more displacement. Therefor the crankshaft has to be taylormade and you need new rods and pistons. In addition you will need a modified controller for the fuel injection and ignition. Maybe Mosselman has a nice turbo kit for your engine? Or you ask Torque Developments International? It will be much cheaper if you try to get a 3.2l M104 from a late W124 or an early W210 or W140. best regards, bis denn, Christian 1989 300TE |
outlook not so good
thanks mate,
i feared that there might be no easy way to get more power, there never is. i had just heard some people dropping hints about how some of the diesel crank shafts would fit but i wans't to sure. i never really expected they would. i looked at that ad on ebay, i might try to contact some of the major houses and see what they say. which probably won't be much. anyways thanks. bye the way i know australia is a long way away. but we still have all the nice cars here.:D |
also aren't the later model 3.2 104s V6s cos if so i'm pretty sure they don't fit in with the Right hand drive that we have in australia.
correct me if i'm wrong. |

Don't waste your time trying to modify that engine. Put in a later model Mercedes large displacement V8 or do this: http://www.badbenz.com
|
If im not mistaken your 3 litre 24 valve put out more power than the 3.2 litre. Doesn't make much sense I know, but I remember reading it in a UK mercedes mag, I think it was like 224 vs 218... but I can be easily wrong on this one.
Maybe it was a 3 litre 24valve m103, is that even possible? |
His 3.0 liter engine is definitely the early version of the M104 engine.
I don't know if non-U.S. models are different, but U.S. engines put out the following HP and Torque: 1990-1992: 217 hp @6,400 rpm. 1993-1995: 217 hp @ 5,500 rpm. 1990-1992: 195 lb-ft @ 4,600 rpm. 1993-1995: 229 lb-ft @ 3,750 rpm. The early M104 from 90-92 still used the old CIS fuel injection system. The 93-99 M104's used the all electronic HFM fuel injection system. The 93 and later M104's also employed the use of variable valve timing on the intake cam, producing more torque and making it available at a lower rpm. The torque curve was also much flatter across the entire rpm range. |
Paul,
you're right, it doesn't make much sense to replace one 217 hp (or euro 220hp) engine with another 217/220hp engine. I ignored the fact that Mike allready has the 24V (M104), even if it is the first version. Quote:
In the near future there will be more problems with old electronics than with old mechanics :p Mike, if you still like the I6, have a look on the engine from a C3.6 AMG. Neil has got one in his wonderfull wagon: Neil's 300TE 3.6 AMG bis denn, Christian 1989 300TE |
Believe it or not some of the best racing parts come from Austrailia. The Aussies also build some of the fastest RACING engines and cars. You should check out the racing scene and see who supplies them. I am sure you can find someone to stroke your motor to a 3.6L. I have seen a lot of racing cars built all over the world and the best ones are from England and Austrailia.
(I am talking about Touring Cars, BTCC type and the old Group A) GOOD LUCK. |
supersec - the V8 m119s apparently don't fit into the RHD set up that we have in australia. this sux big time because i love the growl of the V8s so much more than the sound of a I6 but hey i like the 300CE so i dunno what to do. I guess i'll just have to pretend. Or ride in the new SL which is ultimate. People sell your souls for a ride in one.
I thought that might be the case with the later model engines having better access to the power. The later model 3.2 liter in the CLKs from 97 is a V6 my mum had one before her current car which is a 3.2 V6 aswell. i'm sure of it. suginami thanks for the performance figures i'll take note of them for reference. but the thing about mercedes is that they looked to protect all the engines above performance and with the lower quality of fuel in australia compared to europe and USA the cars were all slightly down tuned i have heard. Speedtek also about the modified and upgraded performance cars out of australia. hell yeah we have some of the fastest street legal cars around. like my friend who has a mid 11sec 1/4mile single turbo I6 3liter SOHC EFI in a car as heavy as my 300CE. and there are more rotarys, skylines supras and local production models hotted up to beyond belief. But Euro cars fetch far higher prices here than over there. and with few local performance shops willing to focus on providing to such a small group the price is either high, or they are to far apart. Euros are classed pretty much just as Luxury over hear. well Luxury, Pimp or Gangsta....:D Maybe thats why i got mine.;) thanks fellas keep throwing in ideas if you have any more regards mike |
pretty much all you can do with your engine is enlarge the displacement. IT can be enlarged to 3.6 liters, maybe even 3.4.
There was a 3.4 AMG 300CE in australia on another site that I have seen. If I were you, I would deifnately research the engine boring. I intend on doign that or finding a C36 AMG motor to throw in my car one day. I'd love to stuff the V8 in my car, but it would not be smog legal here in California, so it would not be able to be registered. Or it would be very difficult to get it registered. There was a 1990 300CE with a 6.0 AMG M117 engine in it, and the car could not be sold in califrnia due to it not being able to be smogged. So when are we going to see pics of yoru ride? Alon |
my car
My car is gonna be on the site soon, i just had it completely scuffed back to undercoats, and repainted. and they are buffing it this week and then fixing the retractable seatbelt hander which i missing a little cog out of the feeder. once that is all done I plan on taking quite a few photos.
i'm yet to lower it though, it will look a lot better then but i'm sure you can all use your imagination. i plan on including dads car in the back ground aswell. like you did with your dads in a few of the shots i've seen on your sight Ash. I have written off to AMG and Brabus to see if they will release any info on what i require, if the do then i will post what i find out. till later. |
