280se 4.5

I know this car was a hot rod in its day. There's one for sale near me. Just how hot was it? Any personal experience on this board?

Not terribly. I think 0-60 is in the 10 second range.

John, these hot rods are fast cars, not quick cars.

I think 0 to 60 is under 10sec.

The fun part is 65 to 110, thats what its all about.

At 65, I kick it into downshift......2nd gear takes you to about 95 and it launches into 3rd, and you are at 110, this takes about 4sec, and still pulling strong.

130 to 150 is respectable, these are fast cars.

Remember, mine is in top shape, don't try this with a 30 year old 4.5 you know nothing about!

Fast is fun!

I feel your covetousness!

Road and Track road tested the 280SEL 4.5 in Nov., 1971 and recorded 0-60 in 11.2 and top speed of 118mph. Not exactly stellar numbers, but it was a vast improvement on the car, which before had only been available with a 180hp 2.8l six which cruised 60mph @4000+rpm!

Also, remember that this car was still subject to some emissions requirements and was thusly inhibited by poor timing issues. My mechanic has performed numerous upgrades to this engine such as installing re-curved distributors and pertronix ignition which really wakes 'em up! As well as improving driveability and economy.

Happy Motoring!

Greetings John-

...per LuckyF8: "130-150mph">>>> huh??? I've not heard of any 4.5 with top speed abilities past 130mph

previously owned '72 280SE 4.5 The 4.5 was a platform of a former era. I was lucky to have one in tip top mint condition and although it could have gone faster than triple digit speed, it wasn't anywhere near as stable as a 6.3 at that perf level.

compared to the big daddy: 6.3 >>> frankly the 4.5 was weak.

I did enjoy the 4.5 for exactly what it offered though, effortless cruising, relatively smooth ride, decent V8 gas mileage 10-13mpg, parts are expensive though

good luck
-fad
