hi there...
looking at some info. about the '87-91 560sec, it seems like this is MBs hot rod.
it only has 238HP but it produces 287 ft/lbs or torque. not bad...

does anyone have any more info?
how tall the gears are?
performance figures?
performance enhancers?
i know renntech and AMG have larger engines to drop in. anyone have any performance figures from anyone?

There is a really good website put together for afficianados of 560SEC's called www.560sec.com There is a ton of information. You also might check Ebay...a few days ago there was a 'real' AMG 500SEC for auction. I think the price was like $15k

But to tell you the truth...I looked at the 560SEC before buying my 500E. I had one for a day long test drive and took it up in the hills. I got blown away by a honda! They might be an awesome highway car, but they don't handle on tight turns. What's my point? I don't see them as a factory hotrod, but rather a elegant cruiser.

Yeah - there's not much discussion of the 560 here in Mercedesshop. Was it a creditable performer of just a soft mildly-powered coupe? Based on what enthusiasts and press had to say about it back in the late 80's - in terms of performace, quality, ride and handling - they now look like a pretty good buy. And low-low-miles examples are available.

Any comments from the performance crowd? Lee - have you driven one of these? Impressions?

maka...
good point.
i think if the suspension was firmed up and stuff, it could definitely handle well.
what kind of performance can be obtained?
i know on the web is see guys like Kirk Sal. and Satish Kum. have 560sec AMGs. those look pretty attractive cars to me...

any more comments from others????
let get a good discussion. i think the 560sec deserves it. it is a true large displacement V8 coupe...

take care all...

I own a 1988 560SEC w/30k miles. Road & Track obtained 0-60mph in 7sec and a 145mph top speed. Car and Driver got 7sec to 60mph and a 140mph top speed in the heavier and less aerodynamic 560SEL). Big V-8 has lots of torque down low for effortless acceleration and will easily reach the 6K redline when pushed with a nice V-8 sound. 2nd gear start can be disabled by selecting 1st and then moving back to D. Limited slip differential and no traction control means you can do real burnouts (and not the wimpy one tire stuff like my C36 for example) and with the small original tires oversteer is always available dry or wet. Excellent build quality inside and out a newer MB can't match. Downside is stock suspension which is more for cruising than for sporty driving but that can be fixed easily with better springs, shocks, wheels and tires.

There is definitely more horsepower in that motor. I owned a UK spec '87 560 SEC that had 300 hp, with a set of lowering springs it handled like a sports car, and was a true 150 mph plus car (saw 165 on the speedo in France once!). AMG cams are available for the car, as well as a Mosselman supercharger, which gives great performance for the money.

hey there guys...
ljad, your 560 must be mint with so little miles. does 1988 have tilt wheel? is the wheel too high? i know what you mean about the C36...
David, i also live in NY, NY. i got a 1995 C36. can we meet up some day?
why did you get rid of the 560sec? how fast was it? i have spoken to barry taylor at AMG west. he has some options for the 560sec, but very expensive options.

does anyone else know where AMG work can be done on a 560sec?

take care all

Email Satish Tummala (www.560sec.com for his email) for SEC tuning options.

His 560 is NOT a 560. Last time I checked it was a 6.0 SEC AMG tuned, with some serious HP (450ish I think). The guy is a rich med-student-car nut, and has experience of Diablos etc etc.
