Hi All,

If I want to use higher voltage bulbs for an '87 260E, since I'm too cheap to go Euro, which wires & relays have to be replaced? How? What trade-offs will I expect....

I wouldn't recommend using higher wattage bulbs in the stock housings.

They can melt the housing a bit, and they can and will burn out the bulb plug and or cause other damage.

The Euros with crappy bulbs are still 100 times better than the stock headlights with the best bulbs.

If you do not like to spend money for the Euro, the cheapest alternative is replacing the current bulbs with the plus 50% type such as Osram/Sylvania Silver Star or Philips Vision Plus. You can get these plus 50% bulbs online at:

If you still want to try the over wattage bulbs, you need to use relay(s), the best reading is from Daniel Stern writting:

first of all philips vision plus 50% are not available in anything but h4, h1,h7, NONE of which will work in your stock u.s. lights.

secondly, relays will NOT IMPROVE THE LIGHT PATTERN!!!

the problem is the u.s. lights/reflectors are junk, [i consider them a hazard] they are NOT designed to put light ON the road.

the ONLY WAY you will see better is euros or [if you won't spend the money] get some QUALITY fog lights, hella, piaa.

if 'seeing' at night is important enough to you, these are the only ways to improve lighting.

ebay.de always has tons of used W124 euro lights for sale ...you can find them here in US too used for under $200..as opposed to $75 just for new bulbs in the sub-par US lights.

Save up for them; you won't be disappointed.
