I met a guy at the local tint shop with a 1997 E520 (W210). He said it was special ordered direct from Germany. It was not a tuner car such as Brabus, Carlsson, Lorinser, etc. He said it had over 300HP and it had the AMG body kit. He was at least 45 years old and I would not suspect a fake badge or a poser. Any thoughts?

Age has nothing to do with imposer. If it's a factory special ordered, there will at least be information about it some where on this Earth.

If what he stated is true, then, which I assume E520 will be a 5.2L V8. But from which?? 4.2L or 5.0L?? 200 CC increasement in displacement pumps out 300hp while "normal" 500E pumps out 315hp??? Or how about 4.2L?? Which pumps out 275hp stock, and give it another 1L, I am sure it will do more then 300hp, or even 320hp. Besides, I don't think Mercedes is willing to make that one and only car....at least not if the money going to be pay(or in your case, PAID)attractive enough(I am not talking about $40K mods, but Multi-Million, blue-printed engine/car/whatever).

Why would someone pay $500K(or even more) for a not so moded W210 while they can have a Fully Moded Renntech V12 powered W210 at 2/3(taxes included. Renntech Moded W210 as shown on Car and Driver listed for $290K)of the price???

Any thoughts??

Sorry to sound skeptical but I think what he "special ordered direct from Germany" was the E520 badge. As Akry said, if any reputable tuner made it then someone here should have heard of it before. Maybe the 520 stands for 520 HP from a 7+ liter V12?

Sorry but that guy is full of it. None of the tuners do anything like that and there was no factory model with an engine like that either. (though there were a few C36 motor'd W210's if I remember correctly) If it was a V8 it would of been a 4.2, 5.0, 6.0 or 6.5 liter. The guy is having too much fun BSing people and playing with badges

300E and then E320
400E and then E420
500E and then E520??
or maybe he increased the engine displacement by himself.

My vote goes to the badge change -- stock E320 - "3" + "5" = "E520".

If you have an E55 why play down its displacement to 5.2 liters (per the badge). Granted it would be a way to lure the unsuspecting but if you are going to do that de-badge it, put a E300 Diesel logo, etc on it...

Since there was no mention of AMG's intervention (which should be the case in any factory tuned W210) it lends more credibility to poser/badge bandit theory.

Lee

PS I take it you didn't get a look under the hood, at the brakes, wheels/tires fitted, interior, etc...

Kevin,

You know what I would do? I would just go BACK to the tint shop, and ask the ppl workin' there about the E520 you saw the last time you were there. If YOU thought the E520 was weird, I am sure the ppl at the tint shop thought it was weird too...and since the guy probably had to hand his keys over to these guys in order to get his car tinted...they probably got a chance to look under the hood just to find out.

I know where E520 guy works. He gave me his card and I have driven by him from time to time. He owns a local towing service. I am curious, so I will drop in on him. The mystery continues.

Hello all.

It is quite possible that the gentleman with the E520 is telling the truth. He might have gone to Germany with a wheelbarrow full of money and had it modified by AMG. Don't forget that AMG used to be an independant tuner and would build whatever anyone was willing to pay for. Just because they are now a subsidiary of Daimler-Chrysler does not mean they don't do custom jobs. They just don't advertise it anymore.

Remember the RennTech SLR7.2 that got the highest rankings in both drivability and durability in Motor Trend's 0-150-0 test? Well, RennTech isn't the only one that will build you a 7.2. AMG will do one for you and they have in fact sold about 600 of them. You just have to have enough cash to pay for it.

Although I would tend to think an E55 would be more desireable than an E520, there's no accounting for taste. to each his own, right?
: )

Yen-Hsen Liem,

Well, that's why I asked on my post above; Which engine would that 5.2L originated from?? 4.2L?? 5.0L?? If it's from 4.2L, bored to 5.2L, and only pumps out 300hp?? Then why bother...just drop in a 5.0L(aka custom made 500E). And a 5.0L with extra 200cc displacement won't help a bit in hp/torque. Not to mention power decrease from 315hp to 300hp....
