Which car would be faster a 16V or an 300E 5-speed. I would like to know which one would be better off the line. I am considering getting one of the two or any other suguested cars you might come up with. I am not concerned with the handling sapects of the two cars the 300E handles just fine for me(wich I believe is the lesser handleing of the two).
Thnk You for any suguestions and information.

I would say the 16V being faster as the weight/hp ratio is more favourable....

Can't you also get the 16v in 5-speed??? I just sold my 300E 5-speed--I was considering buying a new 5-speed (like a V6 Passat or something)before breaking down and buying another MBZ (E420). E420 is great, but the 5-speed 300E, at about 600 lbs. less, was a BLAST to drive. --Mitch

Subman,
I own both an '86 300E 5-speed and an '87 16V 5-speed. If you believe the magazine reviews they are both 7.5 - 8.0 second 0 to 60 cars. So by the numbers they are very similar but in reality they are quite different. The 3.0 liter I6 is smooth and quiet, the 2.3 16V L4 is...not as quiet or smooth. The 16V loves to be in the 4000 - 6000 RPM range; the 6 cyl doesn't mind high RPMs it just doesn't beg to be there. If the handling differences between the two don't matter to you then you need to drive both to determine which engine suits you better.

Good luck,
