Question Brake Rotors

I need to replace my front brake pads on the W210 M104. Question is, should the rotors be machined at the same time??

I've had conflicting information my different sources. One was from the dealership that says no, the rotors are never machined. They are either good enough to keep going or they are replaced.
Other forum members have mentioned that they get the rotors machined at every other pad change and replaced at every 2nd change. Who is right?

I'm afraid that if the rotors machining them may allow them to warp faster in the future. Is this possible?

Rotors are cheap, but you should bed them in on old pads...

Iw ould look at your discs. if there is a significant lip, you may want to have the min thickness checked to see if they are still within spec. if they are, I would probably just have the lip machined off, maybe a very light machining pass on them, and use them for another set of pads. then I would go for new discs.

Thanks but why old pads?? Won't this cost more in labour?

Thumbs up Every Other Time

My Dealer told me the same thing about never machining the rotors, but now I go to an independent shop and they told me it would be OK to replace the rotors every other time if the rotors were in good shape. The independent shop machined the rotors, saved me a couple of hundred dollars, and the brakes feel better than ever. I called the shop after the job to tell them how happy I was with the feel of my brakes and they told me that since the rotors were machined, it was possible to have the brakes adjusted so that there was even less "play" in the system. Previously, the brakes did not respond until my pedal was pushed closer to the floor and the Dealer told me that Mercedes brakes were designed to work that way. They were always awesome brakes, in terms of stopping the car, but I always liked the pedal to be high and tight on my other cars so it felt odd to have to press down so far before engaging the brakes. Now my brakes are better than ever and they were machined with new pads installed. I don’t think the warping issue is really a concern because the rotors will still be replaced every other time. Go ahead and save some money and stay clear of the dealer even if they do wash your car.

Skimping on brakes is not a good idea as evidence by what happened to me the other day.

I was towing about 12000 lbs with the suburban and lost my brakes on a small down grade. There is nothing like the feeling you will get as you are slowing down for traffic and all of a sudden your brakes stop working.

Luckly I was able to avoid the stopped car in front of me and bring my truck to a safe stop on the next hill. The moral of this story is if the rotors are not with in spec replace them as they are cheap are compared to your life. Also do not tow over your rated weight.

I am currently looking into changing my brakes on my Suburban and going with Discs all the way around. Any body have any information on this change? Stillen is what I am looking at.

Have a great day
