synthetic motor oil

hi,

I am a proud owner of a 1992 500E with low mileage and which i keep maintained and serviced by the authorized Mercerdes-benz dealership here in Lebanon.

since I bought the car which is second hand,I have switched the motor oil to fully synthetic; Mobil 1 (10W-50W) to be specific.

I am wondering if Mobil 1 synthetic Oil has advantage over coventional motor oil in terms of engine protection.

happy to get any idea about that.

DO A SEARCH AND ENJOY! And you will see that we have worn this topic to the ground hence the lack of response to your question.

Here in the U. S. we have Mobil 1 in 0W40 for modern MB's, stocked by dealers - it's hard to find that weight in retail auto parts stores. The original specified grade dino oil for my my '92 500E was 20W50. When I asked my dealer to switch it to Mobil 1 at around 99K miles, they filled it with the 0W40. I didn't like the reduced oil pressure at idle speed that the reduced viscosity afforded. I have read that the increased lubricity of the synthetic makes up for the reduced oil pressure, but my engine sounded happier when I filled it with Mobil 1 15W50. That's what I use now in both my MB's.

As yal stated, hours of reading await you if you search. I just thought you might appreciate hearing from someone with the same car.

I agree, use the 15W-50 and you will be very happy. It does indeed provide extra protection as well as lower oil temps. The only other synthetic oil I'd consider using is Mobil Delvac-1 5W-40 but the 15W-50 is great stuff. Oh, Amsoil and Red Line synthetics are great too, but cost more and aren't any better, just equal (IMO).

has anyone thought about putting an oil temp gauge in their 500E? Where would you put it?

Cheers.
