300E Valve Job

Hi,

Head gasket blew on Thursday.

Confirmed it this am by pulling plugs. One was wet.

Anyway, I have a quote for $2K to do a valve job, etc. on the head since it's going to be out.

I thought there might be a few things the machine shop can do to make the car a little more lively.

It's a 1990 300E with 135K miles. Bottom end is strong with no oil consumption. Using Castrol GTX and changed often and hot.

Any ideas for the machine shop?

Thanks,

Do a 2 angle cut on the intake valves. Since the head will be shaved your compression ratio is going to go up.

$2000 includes parts and labor?? all new valves and guides?

on my 1993, with the M104, it ran me $3500, new everything.
I think it runs better now than before- 140K going strong.
Whay does the higher compression ratio do? anything different i should be doing?

i drove it real easy for about 2k, as a "breakin" just in case.

good luck!!
when you get it back, you will love it again

Wow, that is expensive, I just rebuilt my head with seals, guides reseated the valves machined the camshaft tunnel for under $500 machine shop labor included, and that includes all the top and bottom engine gaskets, since the engine was already opened up I decided to put new rings, bearings, oil pump, and new head bolts, altogether, I have not spent more than 1000 dollars, I still have to pay my mechanic, Probably another 500 dollars.
My car only had 185.000 kilometers but needed the head job because it overheated !!!wife!!!. Its a 1987 300 e euro with a 103983... engine.
Maybe you should check into purcasing a remanufactured head. I saw one for under a thousand in the Performance Products catalog I just got.
Take it easy

Hi Ticobenz,

Probably the hourly rate for labor.

Also, the head is probably 3 to 5 hundred dollars to redo. Most of the cost is the labor. Parts are cheap.

Hope that explains some of it.

Regards,
