500E upgrades

hey guys im hearing of this first gear start, and ASR defeat switch, and y pipe talk about the 500E's. Isnt the first gear start the same thing as putting the pedal to the floor from starting position and ur car just launches from first gear. And the ASR defeat switch, cant you disactivate that form opening ur hood and unhooking the cable. And whats that Y-pipe whats the advantages.

The 1st gear start basically allows your car to always start in 1st gear. Without it your car will naturally start in second gear and only shift into 1st when the car is already rolling. You can shift into 'B' with your gear lever which is the only way to start in 1st gear when your at a stand still.

If you disconnect the ASR cable your also disabling the ABS but yes disconnecting this cable will defeat ASR.

Don't know about the Y-Pipes.

Y-Pipe, removes the center resonator and weights less then the center resonator. It *cough* "may" give you a slight power increase though I really doubt it. But it will give you better sound.

Y pipe rules

The pipe makes the biggest performance difference, MUCH to my surprise. If I were to do only 1 mod, that would be the one

Hey Michael,
How much louder is the exhaust? Is it noticable at normal cruising speeds or just in the high RPM range?

Thanks!

I have a y-pipe in my 190 2.6 and it did increase the sound, in a good way, IMHO. There is a gurgle or coughing sound when the car is engine-braking, which I really like. I would expect the 500E to be the same. Also, cruzing on the highway (~3000 rpm) the sound is louder (lower frequency).

It's maybe 10% louder at highway speeds, but maybe 25% louder under WOT. Sound is much better, but no burbling.

My car is into ASR much more readily now- seems like it really wants to spin

FWIW, I installed the Y-pipe then drove around with the stereo on loud, so that my impressions wouldn't be biased by the increased noise. I noticed the throttle response improvement immediately, and the ASR involvement just seemed to support my initial impressions

Michael,
Thanks for the feedback. I'll have to think about this mod...sounds promissing!

Norm,
Maybe I'll wait until you get it...and decide after you take me for a ride in your car!
