FINALLY!! 16V Custom Throttle Bodies---DONE!!
 

Hey everyone!
As a lot you you know, I've been working on custom-made individual throttle bodies for my turbo 16V project, and I'm finally done! It took a lot of designing and even more machining! And I'm very happy with the result. They have not been tested in the car, so for all I know, they might not work, but I believe they will. I'll soon find out!
The stock intake was cut behind the injector bosses and a flange was welded on to attach the trumptets. The butterflies are linked together with stainless steel shafts that are connected via backlash-free couplings. The trumpets have special bearings that are designed to withstand a great side load as encountered with high boost, and can be used in a wide temperature range without jamming the shafts. Everything was powdercoated for looks and durability. The throttle linkage works with the completely stock throttle cable. The TPS is mounted on the left side, but is not shown in this pic. Also, I have made a plenum that attaches to the plate where to trumpets begin. The turbo will feed the air into the plenum, then to each throttle body.

Dave, I've got the DTAfast E48 ECU made in the UK. It's similar to the TEC-3.

I should also note that the shape of the flare on the trumpets was very carefully designed for optimal airflow. It's designed to evenly accelerate the air from the plenum to the narrow trumpet as efficiently as possible.

I'll post more info as I finish the project up!

very impressive! I've been thinking about doing a similar set up on my C36 engine. Only prob is I have to start from scratch on that one since the intake is made from plastic.
First thing I need to do is have a plate made that will mate with the head, then I was going to see if I can maybe utilize an existing set up like one for a BMW or other inline six. (of course, I doubt I'll be that lucky)



I'm glad to see there are at least a few true performance enthusiasts into MBZ's.

Actually, I was looking into this similar route, and it should work! They "key" portion would be to fabricate the manifold to bolt onto your head and to the BMW (Bosch) throtlle bodies/intake. When I first started to investigate EFI, my mechanic recommended I take the BMW S14 EFI (E30 M3) apart, but after recommendations from Dan and other members of 190revolution.net (plus seeing Benzmac's awesome forcefed 16v), I decided to get parts fabricated too!

this is just the thread i have been looking for, or trying to start but i guess you've really got to have something for people to look at before you can get there attention. Like Alain.V i am looking to either fabricate or modify another manifold from another inline 6 to fit on my M104 3.2L I have looked at a ford 4.0L, a nissan 3.0l, toyota 3.0l, and i think that Alain is right i think that it is possible to modify another intake manifold to fit with my head.

It would never look quite so good as Dan16v's but then i wouldn't want to show im up. (j/k)

Alain let me know if you find anything that fits, or atleast comes close. maybe the BMW 2.5L 2.8L or 3.0L although they may not have the right Airflow.

Dan do you have a engineering degree or something, how did you work out the best flow pattern. I'd love to be able to work on something like that. Is there an advantage to having essentiallly what is 4 throttle bodies. my other alternative was to look at fabricating a throttle manifold with a 4.0l ford throttle body or a 3.8L holden(GM), then creating a set of tuned length intakes with the injectors at the bottom on there own spacer like sections of piping,(as jumbled as that may sound it makes sense to me.) then on top of the throttle body i would have a custom plenum that led towards the supercharger exhaust port.
