Won't you post a poll to see how many people think it is perfectly acceptable to and actually do powerbrake their Mercedes.
As far as the "stall test", I don't know enough to be for certain on this, but I would be willing to bet that with one of these tests the brakes are applied and the driveline torqued a little...but I bet there are no spinning tires, smoke or squaling! |
MBTJC, power braking looks fun, but wear and tear to rear brakes and future big expensive problems will come to your Torque converter. Mark my word, one Benz owner to another..........

SPINEDOC, thanks for sharing the Berkwerks info with us. I'm very interested in it. Berkwerks is about 10 minutes away from me, so I may go there to investigate farther

I put the First Gear Start on my 93 W140 a couple weekends ago. What a difference. Yes, you can get the same result moving the shifter to B and back, but who wants to do that all the time.
Because of the incredibly detailed instructions, it took only about 90 minutes to complete. And I had my 10 year old helping. Bottom line, it's more fun, easier on the tranny, and safer pulling out into heavy traffic. And the Berworks guys are great to work with. |
Definitely get it, awesome fun. At the risk of inciting a flame war, it also makes it easier to lay rubber when you power brake :-)

I"ve got a bergwerks keyless entry system I bought for my 94 E420. Still looking for a good time to install it.
I was thinking about the 1st gear start as well. I've already purchased a new wood cover for the A/C unit and switches that happens to have 1 more opening that I currently need. Reserving that spot for the 1st gear winter/summer switch. Willy |
Spindoc; thanks for your write-up. Very well reported. I'd like to put the "kit" on my 1991 300SL. The 300SL has a 5 speed auto. I talked with bergwerks and they told me to check for a kick-down switch under the gas pedal. I did that and I don't have a switch there. But there could be a switch someplace else on or along the throttle linkage. If so, I haven't located it. Do you have the kick down switch under the gas pedal in your 500SL? I've found that my car will start in 1st via the move the shifter to 2 and then back to 4 or D approach. Also, it will start in 1st if floored. But the selectable shift points of the "kit" really appeal to me. Bergwerks told me they have never done a 300SL so they aren't sure if the kit will work. Tod
