500E water pump replacement
Anyone out there tackled this one? I'm having a hard time removing the bolt at the center of the viscous fan clutch - can't hold the pulley in place well enough to torque it loose. The service manual says you need a special tool to hold the pulley - any other ways to skin this cat?

The Factory Tool That goes behind the Pulley is Needed!
I Would ask at the Local dealer If You Could Borrow one ..With a Deposit...or try to locate one from a Fellow Member Here! Good Luck! Also...PLEASE make sure the Allen Bolt head is clean.Use Shop air and or Brake Clean to clean it out!..As Not to round it out!... I Have Done That! MICHAEL!!!!!
Put the fanbelt back on and tension it up. that should provide enough friction on the fan pully to undo the bolt.

Tried that
But it really didn't offer that much resistance, and I cranked up the tension a bit higher than normal.
Think I'm gonna have it flat bedded to my tech, since I'd also have to remove the crank balancer to get at the bottom-most water pump bolt. And just to make things suck a bit more, my air pump's bad - it recently decided to consume 2 monobelts and makes an awful racket. There's a clutch rebuild kit that should take care of that problem. Oh well, I haven't had to do anything in a while so I guess it's my turn...

OUCH !!
Michael,
Looks as if MidOhio bit you with all those track sessions but glad you made it home in one piece. If it's going to die, good to die at home in peace. There is a special tool to hold the pulley while you loosen the viscous fan assy. and many cars are similar to that nowadays. The mfgs. don't make it easy for the DIYers these days so the dealers can have an excuse for the big bucks. Surprised you didn't change the pump when you did all the hoses a while back...while you were deep into it all! Glad you took my advice and decided to help moderate this forum. Only 488.7 miles (one way) to BeaveRun in July!! Let's do it! Tobias MB 190/5.6 |

Toby,
I considered doing the WP at that time, but you really don't have to get too deep into the motor to do just the hoses (no need to pull the fan, fan clutch, air pump, alternator, radiator, etc) Is that BeaveRun date with MBZ? I'm gonna run there next week 4/25 in Trackman's P-car (getting ready for the Lap) so will share my track impressions
