Cool "Haulin' the mail"

I thought you guys would get a kick out of this picture - that's me and Blitzen coming up through the Esses at Watkins Glen this past Monday. FWIW that's one of my students along for the ride; TracQuest is big on instructors taking students out in our own cars (his was a Ferrari 308GTS quatrovalvole) and I think my student had a pretty good time (well, at least he didn't throw up :p )

Thumbs up

Sweet Pic! That is some serious tire roll, you must wear the writing off the sidewalls after a track event.

So are you an instructor now?

Those tires are RA1 Toyos, at 40 psi hot front and 32 psi hot rear. Surprisingly, there's not a mark on the sidewalls!

Yes, I did instruct that day, and I instruct at HPDEs for PDA, TracQuest, MBCA and NASA. It doesn't mean I'm fast, just consistent

excellent pic!

Thank you for sharing, Michael!

(PS - Are you sponsored by Toyo - or are you lucky enough to have an unlimited tire budget?)

Toyo RA-1s - best deal on a track tire going, durability-wise

Funny you should say that, 'cuz I actually have a set of 18 X 8.5s ready to go; however, I'm inclined to think that race tires need some sidewall to work properly, ESPECIALLY with a soft street suspension.

My slicks are nearly shot, and as of now I'm inclined to simply replace them with the same thing

1 thing to consider if you go to a staggered setup for the track - you will go through 3 front tires for every rear since you can't rotate. The track KILLS the outside fronts, as well as wearing the inside of the rears, so unless you plan to dismount/remount/flip the tires regularly (like every track event!) be ready to buy a lot of front tires.

Plus, if you run 8-10 lbs (hot) more pressure in the fronts, the tendency to understeer goes away and it's a very neutral car.

Good luck!
