Benz Shows Nose of SLR

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled part of the new SLR super sports car that will debut at the IAA auto show in Frankfurt, Germany, in September.
The SLR McLaren new super car revives the glorious existence of the SLR 300 that was so successful in 1955, when it achieved one-two victories in the Mille Miglia, Eiffelrennen, Targa Florio, Swedish Grand Prix and Tourist Trophy with Juan Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss, and Karl Kling. The ‘Silver Arrow’ SLR 300, with its 3.0-liter, eight-cylinder engine developing up to 310 horsepower, had a maximum speed of 190 mph.
Rudolf Uhlenhaut, head of both passenger-car testing and racing-car development at Mercedes-Benz at the time, proceeded to build a road-going coupe version, the 300 SLR Coupé, or also known as ‘Uhlenhaut Coupe’, which incorporated the design and technology of the 300 SL Gullwing into the 300 SLR competition car. It first appeared on the roads in 1955. The car that weighed 2462 lbs had 310 hp and reached a top speed of 176 mph. But it did not make it into production as the time was not right for a super sports car, and Mercedes also withdrew from racing. The SLR project was put on ice. Only two prototypes were built.
With the new SLR McLaren, Mercedes-Benz wants to underline the history of the SLR and the revival of the company’s passion for super sportscars. Some styling elements were taken from the original SLR and from the 2003 Formula 1 Silver Arrows.
With the new car Mercedes and McLaren want to show their collective experience in development, construction, and production of high-performance supercars. An example is the series production of carbon-fiber composite materials in the construction of chassis and body. That is why the SLR has a rigidity and strength never before achieved in road-going cars. This, together with carbon crash structures results also in a very high level of occupant protection. Furthermore are the brakes made of a new composite material: fiber-reinforced ceramics.
The SLR will be equipped with a new V-8 supercharged engine developed engine developed by Mercedes-AMG. Mercedes does not say anything yet about the potential of the engine, which will be hand-built.
